Recommended Preferences settings for µTorrent:
(if the option is not mentioned here then it means no or either - user's choice, or I couldn't be arsed )
General:
Check for updates - yes
New torrents start in stopped mode - yes
Prevent stand-by if there are active torrents - yes
Alternate list background colour - yes
Check association on start-up - yes
Associate with .torrent files - yes
Enable Encryption - yes
Folders:
If you always want to download your torrents to a specific folder then
Put new downloads in - yes, and put the path to the folder (or browse for it) in the textbox
If you like to store completed torrents in another folder then
Move completed downloads to - yes, and again put the path to the fold in textbox
If you want to store the .torrent files in a specific folder then
Store .torrent files in - yes, and add path to textbox
Network:
Do
NOT
use 'Randomise port each time µTorrent starts' - unless you have all ports open and forwarded (definitely NOT recommended lol)
Best to choose a port in the range 50000 to 60000 and enter this value in
'Port used for incoming connections' (make sure you have forwarded this one port value in the router and firewall - TCP and UDP) Port forwarding help from:
HERE
Global maximum upload rate - 0 for unlimited, or a value that is about 65% of your max upload rate if you want to browse the internet at the same time
Global maximum download rate - 0 for unlimited, or a value that is about 65% of your max download rate if you want to browse the internet at the same time
This is a question of experimenting with the values until you find a configuration that suits your pile of scrap, you call a system lol.
Enable UPnP port mapping – Individual choice - setting this will show you as being unconnectable on certain private tracker site
Protocol Encryption - Outgoing = Enabled
Allow incoming legacy connections - yes
This setting may help those that have problems with their ISP’s filtering out and stopping torrent traffic.
As more and more people are using this - it is recommended to enable it (but not Force)
The 'allow incoming legacy connections' - yes - this is for connecting to those peers that are not yet using Protocol Encryption.
Torrents:
Enable DHT Network – For Public trackers YES. Private trackers NO
Enable DHT for new torrents – See above
I personally never use DHT on either type of tracker - My choice
Enable Peer Exchange - NO - its another type of DHT – My choice
Enable scraping - yes - this allows you to stop a torrent (when you have at least 1:1) and yet still see how many seeders and leechers are still on it - useful if you need to raise your ratio as you can see which torrents you can jump back on.
Pre-allocate all files - this will make space on the hard drive for all new torrents - varying opinions - I like it and set it on.
Seeding Priority:
Type the required ratio needed here - I use 150%)(I give back 50% more than I downloaded - the more the better.
Seeding tasks have higher priority that downloading - personal choice - I set this on as I am more interested in seeding back and keeping a good ratio, (cough Bullshit cough) as you should be.
If this is set you may find that the download rate will reduce and hover around the upload value - useful as when the torrent finishes your ratio on the torrent will be at least 0.5 if not 1.0
When Torrent has reached the seeding goal
Limit the upload rate to - yes - you probably have other torrents to seed, so allow more of your bandwidth to them by limiting torrents that have reached the required ratio.
Other:
Automatically load torrents in directory - when you download a .torrent file you may want to place them in a folder that µTorrent will continually check. When it finds a new .torrent file it will automatically load it up ready to start.
I find this useful and set this option on.
Allow µTorrent to send anonymous version number and random id when checking for a new version – Individuals choice
Also - if you choose Properties from the context/right click menu for each torrent, you can fine-tune each torrent's speed and Ratio Max (etc)
For more information, visit the FAQ on the µTorrent
SITE
I hope you find this to be of some use.
Hey Guys. Is this worthy of Stickiness?? (If not I'll bin the fooka) The interesting settings will come next.
Heavy Stuff....Not
How to add ipfilter to uTorrent. Very important imo
1) Go to START--->and RUN
2) Type in %AppData%\utorrent (As written. Including the % signs)
3) uTorrent folder will open.
4) Add IP block list
5) Close utorrent (if it is running) and restart it.
6) In Utorrent Click on the "logger" tab (where you see General, peers, pieces..ect..)
7) It should say that the IPfilter.dat is loaded, and the size.
Thats it you are done. Piece o piss eh!! |

Thanks mr.shadow, guide sticked.
Enabling Protocol Encryption is _very_ important for speed. |

Overall it's a very nice guide. It's good to see that it's written in plain English to help some people who may struggle with some of this.
A few small points if I may:
1. Some screenshots might be helpful
2. Max open half open TCP connections with the patch from www.lvllord.de (I know this isn't Utorrent but it still is a setting to configure) |

enabling encryption made my speeds jump back to where they are supposed to be... thank you... also switching up my ports every other day or so seems to work for me too... apparently i have to keep my ISP guessing... |

Very good written!
How about a tutorial to set up µTorrent for isoHunt RSS feeds?
Cause I don`t get it running (it says the .torrent is invalid)
I also tried out RSSAtellite v0.3.2
maybe someone knows the hack |

mr.shadow this is a very handy post, I just bookmarked it.
There is a post on the BISS website which also recommends DHT off. It also has a link to a Wikipedia entry on DHT, which is highly technical and went way over my head, may as well have been writen in cuneiform.
Could you or some other experienced user explain in plain English the pros and cons of DHT and why you elect to turn it off. I currently have it on as this was the default and as I didn't know wtf DHT stood for (at the time) I left it as it was.
Guidance from the wise would be appreciated |

Very timely,
Recently discovered PG2 lists dated August 07 and BISS lists dated 2006.
I know you will hate me but I may have to rep you for this one. You've been warned.
I don't know about others but I had a lot of trouble getting this to load. It only worked as advertised after exiting µTorrent and a restart. |
