When it comes to video games, most people in the mass majority of society put them by the wayside. It is only the few amongst the masses such as we who can fully appreciate them for what they are, though we sometimes sacrifice our credibility and status along the way. Video games have given us countless memorable moments which I will allow you to recount now...........ahhh, wasn't that nice. Resident Evil gave us one of our first terrifying moments when the decaying, blood-stained z-word stopped feeding to turn and look up at you. Fallout gave us the freedom to do whatever we wanted in the doomed, post-apocalyptic world, and we in-turn scared ourselves. Video game designers are the architects of the artificial world, but we ware the ones who step through that door, and create the memory.
And so, my beloved brothers whom which the world does not understand save for ourselves, what is the greatest or most memorable game series?
It can also be a stand-alone, simply explain.

For me, it is Fallout. They have consumed my life, and have given me the insight into what the world will inevitably be like in the post-nuclear fallout future. If you have played them from the beginning, then you know. If you haven't, I think you can find them here.

I would have to say pong or pacman.

All of the above mentioned just happen to all be more recent games with the exception of zelda which while it did take forever to play I don't think really "made" anything. Hell nintendo altogether was taking advantage of a market that had been brought about by calicovision and atari.

If you really want to talk about influence though, I think you need to go back to the beginning.

Possibly doom, or wolfenstein for the fps genre. More because they were the first than the best.

Or you could just base it on sales.
In which case I do believe super mario bros takes the cake, or was it wii sports... either way, I don't really think either of them deserves much acclaim. Tetris also has sold a hell of a lot of copies world wide over the years.

Anyhow, what I guess I'm driving at is I don't think the poll options are very comprehensive or realistic when going to assign some grand prize.
I don't think raw sales really means much though.

sorry i didn't put other option. i was quickly compiling. but in my defense, fallout camout more than 15 years ago, and was the first of its kind. as was resident evil when it came out 96', and final fantasy 87'. i feel i was being fair with the exception of Mario and a few others. sorry.

I would say one of the biggest influences on home gaming was Donkey Kong and it's spin off the Mario games. (not saying it's the greatest but I do think it's one of the most influential having reached a bigger audience than almost all others. Pac Man i would say is right up there but no significant games by that series in quite a while)

Donkey Kong originated in 1981 and the Mario games have been played in basements, kids rooms and living rooms ever since. They have always remained popular and current. The New Super Mario is no exception.

To me, this has created memories of playing for multiple generations to last for a life time, more popularity than any other game series that I can think of.

BTW, March 10th is Mario Day. If you abbreviate it, you'll know why. MAR10 Very Happy

Im going to say Wolfenstein 3D considering it spawned what is quite possibly the most popular genre of the last few years, that been the First Person Shooter. Im well aware its not the greatest series but it is definately influencial.

8-bit NES Final Fantasy made strides with storyline and digi-music
the Final Fantasy line has continued to break boundaries with gameplay, graphics, &&... it's my choice for the poll

all the other brands were going for rinse and repeat arcade-style games
or electronic re-makes of board(bored)games or PC favorites ported to console

i also remember when Doom first came out and it was either free or very cheap but completely different from anything i had played before - so groundbreaking as well - i haven't played any of the later Dooms though - so can not claim that the series was all that inspiring or not

Another thing about doom was the multiplayer.

Though if I really had to give a fps game credit for multiplayer it would probably be the original counter strike game.
For years it was the most played online game, and to this day still has a massive following.

i played and enjoyed the entire myst - riven series. i think this was a big development phase for sound, graphics and immersion play.

i've yet to find something that compares to it, everything is violent.

hello kitty island adventure?

there are actually a lot of newer puzzle games, they just aren't advertised that much because they generally don't require the budget of the big names.

I would actually suggest a game called dreamfall: the longest journey to you though. It's not violent and is based on difficult to solve puzzles and a rather interesting world to navigate.

http://www.dreamfall.com/

at least I don't remember any violence in it... for some reason they want your age to access the site though...

Anyhow the world and graphics were pretty memorable even though it's a number of years old now.

Doom popularised the FPS genre, it didnt birth it.
Wolfenstein 3D was the first FPS game ever released.

Also it appears we all forgot about Street Fighter!!
In my opinion its STILL the best Beat 'em Up series and has pretty much owned the 2D fighting scene since it was created.
Aside from Street Fighter: The Movie (videogame of the film) there has never been a crap Street Fighter game.
