There are many great lists available on the internet, free of charge. There are, however many reasons to create your own lists. For example, you might want to create
"allow"
lists of websites IP's that you frequent, your work's IP addresses, or particular gaming servers you use for instance... or you might want to
BLOCK
some IP's such as
known cheater clients
from connecting to you! You will see the name of the client and the IP address in your bit torrent client under "Peers".
Note:
If no ip address is showing (in uTorrent) right click on the user/client you wish to block, select
"Log Traffic to Logger Tab"
wait a few seconds and click on the tab titled
"Logger"
(last on the right) and you will see their IP address. (See pics)
Add that to your blocklist (instructions on how to do that are at the end of this stickie).
You can get PeerBlock (free) from
HERE
Known cheater clients
(will update)
Here's a thread
on "cheater" clients.
Bitcomet
Bitlord
Bitroll
BitThief
Bit Tornado
BitTyrant
Fake uTorrent
FlashGet
Limewire
Torrent101
TorrentQ
Xunlei
An explaination as to why these clients are bad
LINK
If you use any of the above clients and join a private site you will most probably get banned.
Most (if not all) private sites ban these clients for reporting false data!
In PeerBlock, creating lists is really quite simple; the following steps will guide you through it.
1. In PeerBlock, click "List Manager", then click "Create List"
2. This window helps you set up your list. First, Enter a description to help you remember what the list is for (I call mine Leeches), Click "browse" and find a place to create your list (I put mine in my documents). Select the "Type" of list you are creating this is what will be displayed in PeerBlock when it blocks any IP's in that "Range". Select
"Block"
. Select OK.
# This is where you enter the IP's you wish to include on your list. To add an IP range (or single IP) follow these steps:
1. Click "Add"
2. Enter a description of the IP range. THis shows up in the main "Log Window" and in "History".
3. Enter the "Starting IP". This is the lowest IP in the range, or in the case of a single IP, the IP.
4. Enter the "Ending IP". THis is the highest IP in the range. If the IP is a single IP, enter the same value as the "Starting IP" -
do not leave this blank.
If you would like to add more IP Ranges to block, click on
"List Manager"
. You will then see your created list (see pic) ^^ . Left click once to highlight it then click
"View"
. Click
"Add"
add the desired IP and close. PeerBlock will then update and add that IP into it's
block
list.
That's it! You are now blocking cheater IP addresses (and any others you've added) from connecting to you!
Most information taken from the official Peerblock site
HERE
all information checked and verified as working. (Yes there's a few confused BitLord/Comet etc. users around as from today!)

I'm a bit confused, Are you filtering the bad clients, or an IP range ? I know how to block IP's ect , and have tried to block clients using wildcards and it didn't work for me. I used to just manually kick an ban em all with vuse. Now im using utorrent and a ipfilter plugin. I would think adding entries would be similar. But again my question blocking by client or IP ? |

By blocking IP JamesHotwire. If you see a peer connected to you their IP address will show, just add that IP to your blocklkist and they can no longer connect to you. |

Thanks rob and you're welcome. I get so annoyed when I upload something and the first to connect is a cheater client. I just know I'm gonna have to upload it all over again! This stickie elliminates that problem. |

What would be cool is "a script to compare the upload rate to the download rate of peers, and output the resulting IPs based on the ratio determined by the user. Script will be able to enable “ipfilter.enable”, and append resulting IPs to ipfilter.dat. End result will be for users to start blocking leechers. And by leechers I mean users who download (for example) at 500kb/s and upload at .5kb/s. " I clipped this from another forum, the guy had stated he was working on such a script, that being posted back in 08. I have not seen such a script. any takers ? |

Normally as a rule ill let something seed for about 24 hours. or ill upload equal amounts up and down, but sometimes when there is NO upload speed i just stop it.
BAD PRACTICE? or not so bad? |

I seed to double what I've downloaded as a rule, if there is no upload speed I generally tend to leave it for a few days to see what happens. I have plenty of memory plus the added luxury of a seedbox for large files so I'm in no hurry to delete stuff.
Was wondering, would it be helpful if we published a list of ip's we are blocking as they are using "cheater clients" so others can block them before they nab a new upload or is that going too far ? |

Unfortunately your IP changes like the weather unless you have a static IP. |
