Wolfenstein 3d, doom, and many fps games that came after that..
But I'd have to say Duke Nukem 3d was the best, and I've been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever since the late 90s which is supposed to be released next year, this kind of game is one that I'd buy a new video card for! |

I think the older games were more frantic and kept you on the edge of your seat. Great weapons hidden to be found with limited ammo so use wisely.
these days after two minutes of play in many games your such a bad ass with weapons to destroy just about anything. Don't get me wrong, many great games out there but the majority (with a few exceptions) tend to be cloning each other.
I like eye candy but really games as the force unleashed 11 should be left under the carpet. Crap is an understatement but when compared to older games many already mentioned here in this thread a game as the one i just mentioned do nothing to live up to the legacy of the past.
Pong has been mentioned a couple of times and I have looked for a link to a games documentary I saw a couple of years ago. Not found it but others may know of it.
It was a TV doc about the games industry and its development. Pong was number 1 as it introduced the gaming console to the home and was the first "commercial success" in bringing a games console into the home.
I agree with the sentiments about doom and for Ultima Underworld I must admit to having forgotten that one completely. My views on the Duke are what they are and I see him being honoured tongue in cheek style in may games that came later. So I suppose to correct my previous statement it would be better to state that the Duke is one of the most influential charachters of all time in the gaming world but not the game itself.
Also a thanks to the heads up about borderlands crew doing next years release. I had not paid much attention but its good news.
Whilst a little stray of the topic I find that games past delivered value for money in most cases but today it has become more confused. I find that too many now sell the candy but the games have often very little meat on the bones. Just my opinion. Getting back on topic many games in the poll actually gave a great gaming experience.
Anyways nuff said and now off to go play fallout 3 vegas again. |

Another thing about doom was the multiplayer.
Though if I really had to give a fps game credit for multiplayer it would probably be the original counter strike game.
For years it was the most played online game, and to this day still has a massive following. |

Half-Life, hands down. Aside from the mass of positive reviews and game of the year awards, it opened the way for complexities like character depth and storytelling. Future games like Mass Effect draw from this. I say it's the most influential because of that. (Not to mention it made Valve rich). |
