I think I will necro this one, its a good thread.
No ignorance is not bliss as other people's ignorance seems to throw a spanner in everybody elses lives. Look at these governments that govern over the working class but have never done a hard day's work in their life. It might be nice for them been blissfully unaware but it isn't for the single mothers and working fathers breaking their backs in this life.
Im not saying you have to turn into a revolutionary. But knowledge is power for a reason, one piece of information could potentially change your life.
Personally I try to learn something new everyday, even if its something small.
Ignorance is bliss is a child's mindstate in my opinion. "Lalalalal Im not listening!!" |

Pac, I agree with you here, especially the bit that says, 'Lalalalal Im not listening!!'
This bit is most important for me as I genuinely do not listen. Mainly because of my ignorance. My wife hates me. But, I also do not know what I am doing unless told of what I'm doing. Usually by the wife. Therefore an argument shall ensue. Because of my ignorance, and here we go again, full bloody circle again.
Sheeeeesh, sometimes the bliss bit of my ignorance is tested..... |

I think ignorance is bliss but knowing the truth about real matters gives you an upper edge to make justifiable decisions and not be taken for a ride around the park with a lead and a pooper scooper and the trainer saying "you are such a good sheep". |
everyone has their own little definitions
and translation is often a key factor in many conflicts (i.e. Tower of Babylon) ::
stupid
: one did(or can)not know ... 'i'm sorry!, you're just stupid' &or 'ya no wut?, yer jus stoopid' is actually a compliment which should be followed up with some explanations as to what Key Facts(Factors) that the subject may have not known &or be wrong in their "knowledge" - stpidity here reflects a lack of knowledge...
ignorance
: knowledge is implied(&or generally understood to be known & understood), but willfully ignored, maybe even subjugated for personal gain(by the loss of others) [...] 'well now!, that's just ignorant(reprehensible)!' - {i.e.}one knows better but chooses to act otherwise, [...] yeah, no elaboration needed ... ignorance is not 'Bliss' - within my definition of ignorance, ignorance is malicious/evil [{i was beginning to type some stuff, but i stopped(&deleted), i have negative feelings towards my definition of ignorance; maybe i have/had high expectations of those that i felt should really not be included in this category}]

Everyone has their own little happy world they would not like to be torn out of, that is where the idea of wearing "rose colored glasses" comes from the fact that all they want to see is what they want to see, creating their own little world in a way.
Ignorance is bliss, but ignorance is also unwanted. I'd prefer to see what truly is going on, that way you know you have a good amount of insight to all that is going on around you, and when you actually find out what is going on, your little world isn't going to be ripped to tiny little pieces around you... |
Some people just disbelieve whats going on around them so their little worlds are self sustaining.
If you look at the bigger picture you see the whole world being ripped apart continously
Good point on the stupidity/ignorance difference earlier in the thread. Wish I was dumm |
or maybe i should revise my little drunken definitions - i always thought ignorance was the better of the two (ignorance/stupidity) maybe ignorance should be the label as one has no knowlegde og the subject and is acting without any basis, whie stupidity it one has the knowledge, but chooses to against the better judgement - damn! i too wish sometimes that i were dumb, but i refuse to belittle others(for the best of my knowledge - i have been told time to time that i have not been so actively aware of those that i belittle - then again i don't really give a rats @$$ about other people - so maybe 'm a heartless bastich - so why should i belittle myself? ...

erm, i have been revising this post for a while now and really should just [ctrl+a][ctrl+c]; alt+tab; 'click' reply, [ctrl+v], 'click' submit
erm actuallly that's what i'm gonna do - finished page 1 and already read page 2, so - after reviewing page two - yup, ...
also after i submit i'm going to pick the 'i'd rather know' - cause i'm not sure how to differentiate stupidity Vs. ignorance -
yet a quick Google search or ignore reveals:: ignore - disregard intentionally
and since ignore is the root of ignorance i will use that as my definition as the greater evil than stupidity (an unwilling lack of knowledge towards the subject matter rather than someone that truly 'does not know')
ignorance is not bliss - it is the willing disregard, while knowing better |

Ignorance is bliss was coined by some Pope back in the dark ages when the catholic church was pummeling Europe with the notion that knowledge of earth is evil because the world is outside of an infinite and eternal being called God. Does anyone else notice the major contradiction in that sentence?
Anyways, the church was setting itself up for major cult status, by teaching these kind of idiot notions, like the one your born into sin. And only we the church can communicate to this eternal infinite being. It was all con job, a means of controlling the masses.
So, while living in ignorance may sometimes seem blissful, ignorance is not bliss.
As to the difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is defined as a lack of knowledge, stupidity is the inability to absorb knowledge.
Since this debate also brings up the notion of Belief in a Divinity or God means that you are either ignorant or stupid is just arrogance on your part. I consider myself quite intelligent and most people I know consider me quite intelligent and I believe in a God. But believing in a God does not require believing in a religion. I was born a Christian and saw too many holes in it, became an atheist and eventually converted to Islam and now feel that I am beyond religion. In fact on my facebook page for some while I had the line; religion sucks the soul out of God.
It is my opinion, but God doesn't want blind faith. During the dark ages of Europe, Islam was going through a golden age known as the Ottoman Empire where all kinds of discoveries were made and this happened because Islam teaches that everything is a part of God and the more you know about the world, the more you know about God. And the Ottoman Empire subsidized and paid scholars all kinds of money to gain knowledge of God essentially. By the way, both Jews and Christians lived unmolested in the Ottoman Empire.
Its funny, cause if you look at the way the western governments are running things, raising tuition fees, watering down critical thinking, and selling education to partners in the corporate world. What you begin to see is an attempt by the government at keeping the population ignorant. Much like the catholic church during the dark ages. Oh yeah, and instead of being born into sin you will be born into government debt.
I don't know if any of you know but that guy with the hair is none other than Phil Spector, he created the wall of sound that so many black R&B bands used in the '60's, and this is how he appeared for one of his court dates. Here are some more pics....

Lesson in Ignorance:
Cop pulls me over one morning during a commute to a new job from a new residence in a new city. Apparently I was driving in a bus lane in the winter, where the lines in the road were obscured following someone else, and despite the clear signage a couple blocks earlier which I obviously missed, my ignorance got me a ticket.
When the cop asks me why I was driving in the lane, I replied, I missed the sign, but there is no excuse for ignorance.
I happily paid the fine.
In too many cases, people on the road take for granted the rules of the road causing accidents and traffic jams. Anyone who insures and drives a vehicle acknowledges that they will comply with the regulations or receive fines and demerits. Failure to be aware of those regulations is irrelevant.
It would have been nice to get a warning, but they gotta make their money somehow. |

Amen to that. If we were not ignorant, then we would know everything. And that's impossible, bliss or not. |
