| That being said, the Vista "Home" editions were by far the worst. Vista Ultimate was not that bad of an OS. It did have some bugs but the biggest problem with Vista was that none of the third party hardware or software was ready for it. After being out for a year or two, most of that had been worked out though. |
Very well put and now all of that works on 7 as it's pretty much Vista just toned down a bit for low end PC's |
Exactly, 7 is as good as it is because Vista became a test bed for it. Curious though, 7 being a streamlined version of vista and all, have you run across any missing funtionality that you had with Vista but not found in 7? I'm still looking and it appears all of the major funtions are still there.

| Although, in my opinion, Windows 7 is an excellent OS. I'm running Windows 7 x64 on my desktop and Windows 7 x86 on my laptop. Both full Profesional versions. The laptop was running Vista Home premium when I changed over. There's a remarkable difference in the use of system resources between the two. Windows 7 is much less resource hungry and runs more along the lines of the old XP pro. |
Again very well put, although why have the resources if your OS will not use them.
Example people complain about having 2GB of RAM and Vista would use half of that. Point is idle RAM is useless RAM, I personally have 8GB of RAM with my pagefile disabled and have never had Vista or 7 use all of it no mater what I have running. (X64 of course) |
I agree completely with the only exception being that it is possible with todays techonology to tax your memory. I am running 4GB of Ram in 7 x64 and when, for example, I'm encoding video with Premiere and doing a few other things at the same time, it does get used up. And I'm betting that as more and more developers begin to use all of the x64 functionality, software will begin to use more and more of the RAM left over by the OS.

| One last thought, I've run into problems with the x64 of both Vista and Windows 7. I'm still waiting for a more things to be compatible with the 64-bit. Hardware, driver, and software wise. But I'm really looking forward to gaming with the new DirectX 11 video cards for 64-bit systems though. That should be great. |
It's not really a compatibility issue but more of a signed driver issue as the 64 bit flavor runs 32 bit programs in a "virtual machine" the excepting is many AV programs, Although not many programs use the full potential of the X64 technology. |
Very true, driver issues are the most common problem for sure. The 32-bit "virtual machine" is not infallable though. For example, just yesterday I was doing homework with Access 2007 on the desktop (7 x64) and found that I could not start the import wizard due to a .dll error. After re-installing twice, I finally talked myself into going to the MS website where I found that Office 2007 has known compatilibity issues with x64 systems and there is no fix yet. Other than something like that, hardware and drivers are definately the major obstacle to clear in the near future. |

Hello JoMalig,
This is a really good topic which operating system is the best, thought both the operating systems are from the same vendors. My personnel favourite operating system is Windows Xp home edition as i am using it for 5 years and still using, it is fast, has good graphics, user friendly interface and many other good stuff, on the other side windows vista is having very high graphics but it is very complex for the people who were using Xp before. So XP still rocks the worlds. |

i would say that vista was just as easy to use as xp... and xp had the same amount of nonsense when it first released...
i believe that there should be no complaining about a newer OS using slightly more resources, such is the trend in computing... what would be the point of advancement in technology and style if you did not take advantage of the more powerful processors and memory... |

If you get new hardware use Win7.
Got "old" HW use WinXP Pro SP3.
Stable, works with every software, less res, faster ... and ... stable
Had Vista at costumers, it's a pain
youknowwhere
, especially on notebooks ...

Got Vista on my personal notebook, have everything from Win XP, Win 7, Mac to Linux on the other ~100 computers. I like Vista, it's quite oki, sure it eats on my computer from the inside, but as long as you got a computer that can support it I see no reason to get anything else, it does what it's supposed to do |

well folks, i have windows 7 on my pc but my laptop has vista & to be honest i find my way round my vista laptop a damn site easier to get round than my win7 pc so i gotta say vista. people keep saying it has loads of bugs but i honestly havent had any problems with vista that couldent be fixed with a quick click & i`ve been running it for nearly 4 years. lets face it folks theres problems with any program you use if you dont know how to use it correctly as it should be used & you just bury the problem which creates more huh. i will upgrade my win7 & see if it makes any difference & add comments again. have a nice day what ever you are using |

Out of the 2 I voted for Vista, but XP is better than both imo. |

Guys which of these two is better just for personal use.
as for me, Im now using windows vista for a month now and
its sucks. I like windows xp sp3 much better. Vista is slow.
Eats tons of resources and memory.
I have a friend who is using windows 7 and he told me he loves it,
he said its great, far mo greater then windows vista.
so, i need your opinion on this before purchasing windows 7. thanks
Mod edit - Thought I would sticky this, please post any windows 7 realated discussion here
|

x64 is already old news - they're already working on incorporating x128
ME was the test bed for XP, and even XP was completely rewritten with sp2 when it became semi stable(&dare i say?) even kinda awesome
Vista was thrown out(read test bed) just to find problems - which they tried to fix with 7, then 7 sp1 fixed more
there's a pattern - when M$ first puts it out for retail it is alpha(or if you're lucky beta) sp1 gives some fixes, sp2 is semi-stable
testing is pre-alpha - free R&D - sadly, even knowing this - i kinda wanta play with their newest home server in a virtual machine - really really sad |
