very nice post $9artan. I found this to be very helpful and I'm giving your settings and try.I will let you know how it works.
I was having some problems with slow download speeds. I tried a bunch of things and never really did figure out what the problem was. I ended up just doing a system restore which solved all of my problems.
I use DSL and on a good torrent I get speeds up to 149 KB\s. Usually in the 125 to 145 range. I am guessing that's pretty good considering my connection.

7. Increasing the number of Maximum Half Open TCP Connections
Usually the maximum no of half open TCP connections in Windows with SP2 is set as 10 for blocking the virus
multiplication. But torrent needs more. To facilitate this a patch TCPIP.sys is available. Through this patch you can set the
maximum no of open TCP connections. Set it to any number between 50 and 100. |
I downloaded the patch but I have not tried it yet. You might want to include a link in your post as you've been very thorough and provided links for everything else you mentioned.here it is:
http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools
Please note that this patch is only for XP w/sp2. Vista and 7 do not limit connections normally. If you want to check to see that you are not limited here is a guide :
http://www..(info)/2009/06/08/disable-and-remove-half-open-tcp-connections-limit-to-unlimited-in-windows-7-and-vista-sp2-with-enableconnectionratelimitin-registry-key/
I tried that Glasnost link for checking Internet throttling. When I went to run the test it completely locked my computer up. I had to shut it down manually. When I went to restart Firefox it automatically reloaded that page and did it again on me. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what the problem might be. I run Windows XP, Avast antivirus,-- Netgear wireless router firewall, and spyware Terminator ( which I suspect caused the problem)
Thank you again $9artan for the very helpful post.

Glad you found it useful and thanks for the link for the patch.
Not sure why your pc is freezing on the throttling test. Strange that, i've just tried it myself and it worked fine. Like you said could have something to do with your firewall settings.
Try the speed test out and see what your results are. |

not the exact same problem - but similar enough
on my laptop i run windows XP pro with sp2, peerblock, uTorrent 1.8.3, Avast AV, spybot S&D, spyware blaster, connect with netgear router(use it as firewall) to ISP clearwire wireless (the speed is atrocious, but hey at least it's not dial-up)
my problem is that every morning i wake up and ... oops internet disconnected (sometime during the night)
same thing - go to work - get home - disconnected (sometime during the day)
and to fix the problem - i have to reboot,
i've tried connecting to a faster unsecured wireless connection in the surrounding area, and still no dice - needs must reboot 'teh windoze'
ideas/hints? ... anyone ... ?
i am going to try that increase max tcp connections thingie |

I have given the settings that you suggested a try. They seem to have made a little bit of a difference.
and then this morning used that TCP connection patch. I think that this is the best piece of advice out of all of it. My top speeds were up just a little bit from 148 Kb\S.to in the mid-150s. I think that's pretty much the max for my bandwidth on DSL. The main difference I found was that moderately seeded torrents that used to run below 50kb/s are now running well over 100.
I had a torrent of the Les Claypool frog brigade with only 10 seeders and 10 leechers average 149.7! This is much better performance than I've gotten on this size of a torrent before.
So I would definitely recommend installing the TCP connection patch and update your connections to 50. My spyware Terminator program hated it and would not let me install it. I had to turn it off. Avast did not seem to mind.
By the way, I noticed in some other threads there were people also complaining about the glasnost test freezing up their system.
here is my speed test. It's up just a little bit since I made these changes.

Great Post (i know its an old one ) the world of torrents can be daunting and confusing...esp to the self taught noobs like me
have heard of port forwarding before, but never properly understood it. There are plenty of links on here to portforward.com and simpleportforward etc, but even running the damn program, i still didnt know how to make it find one of these "open" ports
I didnt realise you actually
chose
a port you wanted opening, and did this in the router setup screen manually and had to set your IP as static to avoid the settings getting screwed. After i realised this, i was well away, and got the hallowed green tick tazzzz speaks of in uTorrent. Ive been using torrents for two years almost, and have
never
had uTorrent optimised, so it seems.
I really wish i had joined the forums ages ago, as my d/l would have been a lot better a lot sooner.
Thanks to all, great advice. |
