Wasuuuup. Haven't been on here in a looooooooong time. Some of you may remember me, but I doubt it. I joined these forums 4 years ago when I was 12. haha. Haven't been on here for as long as I can remember. (MODS, if you can change my username for me somehow can you? or just let me make a new account and +73 rep it? Let me know plzz)
Anyways, I just clicked off this tab by accident and have to re-write all my shit. damn it. I plan on building a new pc and hopefully having it sat right next to me by January. Sounds like a long time but it's not. I plan on using it for internet, emails, assignments, the occasional video editting, animation and hd video rendering, capturing xbox 360 gameplay and foxtel for xbox. and porn.
This is my proposed build excluding peripherals (and psu, was thinking 750w?), check it out and let me know if anything's wrong with it or you have a better cheaper suggestion. Budget including peripherals is $1500 MAX. I want it to last a fair while before I spend serious money on a computer (I am saving for a car too.)
Asus Sabertooth x58 Motherboard
- Was thinking Rampage or Gene but can't stretch it moneywise.
Intel i7 950, Overclocked to around 3.8-4ghz?
- Once again, can't stretch to an i7 2600k :/
64gb SSD, using for OS (Windows 7). Maybe 32gb instead?
2x WD 1tb HDD's in RAID0
2GB Raedeon GPU
- If anyone can find a good alternative whether 1gb or whatever let me know
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste for CPU (must I link?)
Corsair H70 Liquid Cooler
LG Blu Ray Burner
NZXT Phantom Case, White
Corsair XMS 8gb 1333 (Overclocked to 1666mhz?)
Blackmagic Intensity Pro Cap Card
- Maybe some compatibility issues? -My friend has one with no problems but all I've heard are nightmare stories, I'd prefer this over a Hauppauge HD PVR as I only play xbox in HDMI.
Sorry they're all eBay links. And I'm thinking Windows 7 64bit OS, and I felt like I forgot something so please let me know what it is because I am not sure :S
Thanks |

Newegg is good but the shipping to australia is insanely high. I'll go pccasegear.com or just ebay
Thanks for the links |

if you want liquid cooling shop around for a maintenance free one. It will make things easier later on. Not sure if that one will need it or not but its best to go straight to the manufacturer for that info as i found conflicting information on a few sites. |

I would say go cheaper on the case, and get the better cpu, otherwise you will regret it.
Also go for a smaller SSD to save money for the cpu
also get cheaper ram to save money on the cpu ( and maybe not have to change the case)
Thats what i would of done, i'd rather get the 2700k than the 950
Other than that it looks like a solid build buddy
FORGOT A PSU!!!
You can get a good Cougar one right now @ newegg with 15% off!!!!

go there and buy your stuff, you wont find a cheaper price anywhere (because cheaper prices are on the internet and they charge shipping)
don't waste you time with the liquid cooler, save money and buy the 2600K and a noctua or xigamtech cooler instead, you will save money and get more performance.
I'd give more advice but I know nothing about HD video rendering is it CPU or GPU limited?
you're right not to waste your time with newegg, or other overseas sites, they're only worth it if you can't get stuff locally. |

for video rendering you need a good cpu and a good gpu wont hurt, 2500k or a 2700k would be the best for that |

Nice, I'll take that into account, esp with the smaller SSD and GPU. I am keeping that case cause it's sick.
Any other suggestions like what GPU should I get? Or are Radeon good? |

I have the same RAM, it does actually support 1666 so that should put your mind at rest. As for a case I would strongly suggest the Coolermaster Haf X as it is currently the best full tower available and costs less than your choice. That money could be used on upgrading one of your other components. |

The motherboard is 1366 pin yet the 2600k i7 is 1155 pin so erm, will that work?
I'll post links again when I'm done figuring this and some other stuff out. |

I would take the GA-P67 UD5 from gigabyte and the i5 2500K or the i7 2600K
You get a very fast combo with full ISB 3 Support dual bios extra phase and voltage control and excellent sound 7.1 with Dolby decoders etc. Sata 3 in extern about as much connectability to even add just about everything but the kitchen sink.
Other good news with these components you cando the OC later as the system will run at 4GHz on the standard intel cpu fan. Change that later.
Whilst i like the water cooling sys that you mention it would be wasted on i7 Sandy bridge as they can not go higher than they do with air. They max out at 5.2 GHz and only about 9% of the cpu's from this series hit that mark. 4.8 GHz about 60% and 4.5 about 99%
Smaller SSD was already reccomended and I agree. Use it for the system.
I like the case pac suggested if you need a full tower otherwise the next best thing is the cooler Master 690 11 advanced with an external hot swap sata bay on the top. I use this case and it is a great piece of kit. The ssd or any sata drive 2.5 or 3.5 just drop straight in and ready to go.
For PSU I say you cannot go wrong with the Coorsair HX 850 W which actually draws 1000w and was awarded gold for efficiency but Coorsair state Silver as they give a 7 year warranty.....
I built a pretty dammed good i7 2600K which you can see on "post your specs topic". I did for less than your budget and could have saved another 160 USD if I went with a cheaper Motherboard. I was a hog and went UD7 when UD3's are hitting 5 gig and UD5 has everything almost that the UD7 has. |

The GA-P67 UD5 is good but WAYY too expensive :/
I'm only looking to spend au$250 maximum on a motherboard, I am still figuring out other ways to save money for other stuff
any suggestions for a good 1155 motherboard? |

UD3 is a lot less in cash but also in ability. The MB and CPU are the meat and bones of your system.
you say 1500 as a budget and you want it to last a few years.
Not being brutal djdaners but a fiat panda will never give the performance or last as long as a Mercedes.
Hard drives, monitors memory cases etc are all cheap. Even the gpu you can go cheap and upgrade as the low end cards today are milestones ahead of anything 3 years old.
There are plenty of good motherboards out there but I have used gigabyte at a slightly higher pricing as their service is second to none. Build quality is also exceptional.
Memory I would check rip jaws by G.Skill. A lot of quality for a low price. Also good rep and good service. Also very tolerant to voltage when overclocking.
Personally my 3 items of a build in order of importance are
1. Motherboard. Without it you have nothing.
2. The CPU as this is the heart of the System
3. The PSU as if you skimp on quality or power delivery at peaks you suffer.
These 3 items are where I spend my money. The board and CPU will also last longer than your GPU as GPU development and upgrades come much faster.
PLus I would wait on Motherboard purchase for a few more months as you have the time and the ivy bridge mother boards will be the new thing n town later this year which will push Sandy bridge socket 1155 prices down |

On my experience , i dont now if this apply to the new processors but i have a core2duo 2.13 and i got a friend that has a core cuad extreme edition at 3.4 or something like that and in the pass 3 years theres not a single app or game he can run better than me because i have a better gpu he has 2X gtx 8800 in SLI and i have a single 4870 ATI i can tell u a good advise for u is to spend more in the gpu more than the processor if you can get the core i5 2400 it will be more than enough i think but maybe u do some hardcore renders and prolly need more power good luck kid. |
