It seems to me that the people who are against assisted dying are stuck in circular argument mode citing the bible and gods wishes etc, as an authority.
They don't seem to be able to recognise the paradox of there intolerance of people who won't tolerate there religious intolerance.
I watched a friend die of cancer recently. On several occasions she begged me to help her die with some kind of dignity. I refused on the grounds that in my country that could result in me being charged with manslaughter or even murder.
We looked into going to Sweden to where a group called Dignitas legally help people to end there lives with dignity without extreme pain or suffering.
However, before we could go there my friend became incoherent from the massive doses of morphine that where being administered and as such could not qualify as you must be of sound mind for legal reasons.
My friend lost the ability to speak soon after. It took nearly six months for my friend to die (and I am not convinced it was not the morphine that did it in the end). For all that time I could quite clearly see in her eyes the suffering my friend was going through. I think the morphine was more so visitors and other patients, doctors, nurses etc, weren't upset by the horrific wailing from patients pain from dying of cancer.
And this is what i want to debate.
I say current laws and attitudes are selfish in the extreme because they are based on OUR reaction to OTHERS pain. WE don't like seeing pain and suffering so we hide it with drugs... but this does not end the suffering! We just can't see it now.
If some-one wants suffer for months or years before they die that is there own decision, but I believe we should allow people an alternative if they wish and are capable of making that decision on there own!

Firstly let me offer my condolences on the passing of your friend.
I believe that assisted suicide should be allowed on cases of terminal illness. I would argue that someone who is suffering in immense pain with no chance of recovery should be allowed to end their suffering at a time of their choosing. As a society we grant many mercy's to animals that we do not afford ourselves. A dog with cancer is 'put down' lessen its suffering. Why is the suffering of an animal any more a concern than that of a human.
If it were me - I would go to Sweden and end it all. I do happen to know that under Irish law, My wife could be charged manslaughter if she were to accompany me in the knowledge that I was going to end my life. |
