HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize\
create a DWORD value called "RemoteFontBootCacheFlags", set its value to 0x100f (4111) |
Would this work on Vista? Asking as my webcam seemingly died after a recent update and the Acer site's drivers install but it still doesn't work.
3rd party webcam apps work fine, but i used the original settings as a kiddie cam via VNC to check what the kids are up to when were upstairs etc.
Acer 2920, Vista sp2 if that helps

Got the newest release today build 8102, direct download from microsoft. It's being put out as a developer preview, but this is definitely a fully functional os that you can activate.

Love the fact that all my drivers came with the package, except my cellphone that I'm using as a modem, had to install the software for that, but works like a charm, and that wouldn't even work on seven, as it was an xp/vista driver. Faster boot times, lower resources, and lots of new stuff. Another really cool feature is a master reset, that will basically put you back at a fresh install without having to do the install.
You can also download here.

the reset is a cool feature for a developers copy, as long as its a total system wide rebuild so you can screw around with things and nuke all the changes when its buggy
checked out that link >>> You can also download here.

I read the blog at the end of that ^ page and it looks like a lot of people couldnt understand what developers copy and beta were supposed to mean.
Havent installed it but if you actually do lose the start menu, and are forced to use metro interface thats an oops. and i guess installing this version on your current OS is a popular thing to try, then you expect to get win7 back like magic. It also seems some people installed on a desktop as if it was a tablet |

In regards to the start menu you can get it back, with this change to the registry, doing this also disables the metro UI, which is fine by me. The metro UI has it's place on tablets, but doesn't really make much sense on a desktop in my opinion.
To get back the old start menu, open regedit, goto
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
change value of RPEnabled from "1" to "0"
Found that on Microsoft's discussion forums and have used it. Loads of other good tips over there as well.

hmm windows 8 will mostly be aimed at tablets and netbooks imo anyway ..Yes it will be on desktop as before but Microsoft really want this to be big on other devices.. |

I think maybe they already did hit the kill switch on developer preview. Around a week ago mine became unbootable, after a series of BSOD's. Had a fresh install on another drive and the same thing, execpt it will boot, but things like the refresh pc, and restore would not work. I never use any of them apps, so don't know about that. The public release of windows 8 beta is rumored to be released in mid February so I be waiting till then running windows 7. |

apparently they still have some work to do. one of the biggest issues i see is that you cant really shut an app down once you start it, the CPU knows best! so it consumes resources keeping apps zombied when they time out and you have to reboot to clear the process queue. and i posted in other thread about intel atom based mobile devices, so win8 is kinda like vista now. so you can run win 7 on an atom device (or xp) also win 9 is on the board, and its a pure 64 bit system, 2016 is zero day for 32 bit hardware as far as MS is concerned.
PS WINPROOF your kids! teach them how to code! buy PI! |

win 8 win 9, why not just make a win 45,743,948 and be done with it. My gfx still has an issue with win 7, googling it a lot of ppl have (display driver issue). |
