This is a super quick tut on how to use xilisoft video converter to convert file formats. xilisoft is the only converter I have ever found that does a good job. A lot of freeware programs convert the file from one format to another with the simple intent making file readable in a different format but does not actually re encode it thus making the file utter rubbish. This is also good for changing the frame rate of video, the main reason why some video does not play off usb sticks.
Step 1
Open up xilisoft and just drag your video file in (Im using a creative commons movie called Big Buck Bunny made with blender, its pretty cool)
Step 2
You will presented with this, my file is in .avi and for this example Ive got it set up to convert it to a .mpg, but it will convert anything to anything, even video to audio.
You will notice the output size of your video, because I have this set up it is about the same as the original, but most times the initial size will differ. Before you go any further you need to ascertain the properties of the original file as we are going to match them up. You can either just click on your file and you should see all the info at the bottom of your screen (where you have the video, not in here) or failing that get gspot to see what it is. gspot would be a good tool to use if you wanted to match up the audio codec the same.
Step 3
Which will open this
The properties of my original file are
Bit rate 4450
Frame rate 24
size 1280x720
So in the above pic you set the advance profile settings to match it.
Video codec
- leave that but you can change it if need be
Video size
- leave it on Auto
Bit Rate
- click on it, highlight the numbers before the k and change it to what your original file size is.
Frame Rate
- This is sort of important, depending on how you plan to play the video, click on it and in the drop down box change it to either 25 or 29.7 fps (thats your pal and ntsc)
The rest in there just ignore.
When you shut that side window off you should see the output file size very similar to what your original is.
Then hit the convert button (big green thing up the top)
Note on Bit Rate
The Bit rate determines the size of the file, the bigger it is the bigger the file. My example it is 4000 (ish) when you want the file for web play back, portable device playback you can make the Bit rate smaller hence making the file smaller. 1000 Bit Rate is a safe rate however 600 or 800 can still be fine, depending on the file and how you intend to play it. |

Good bit of kit, xilisoft. There are hundreds of converters out there, it can be hard to pick a good one. This definitely up there. |

I use Xilisoft video converter ultimate 6, better than most of the video converters I've used.
Nice, quick guide. |

This guide helped me quite a bit. [/me sticks tongue out at breadthief] |

Try a normal AVI file, see if it plays.
Also, we are hijacking trollster's Xilisoft tutorial so if you still need help maybe make your own thread, you'll probably get more informed replies than mine. |
