Using Bitlord, my dl's are averaging 20 kbps, at most 50kbps, but usually under 10. I am running a fast machine, and my internet connection is 5MBps cable modem. Are there any approaches to reach MBps downloads using my current torrent client, Bitlord, or should I switch to a different client? Are there any changes I need to make to my Internet properties or system properties? Any help much needed. |

I use Utorrent and it works pretty well. Opposed to bitlord im not sure who they stack up to one-another but get around 150-250 kbs with my 54 mbps isp but my conputer isn't all that fast. You can get Utorrent
here.

since your on cable like me, you may be subject to bandwidth shaping, which cuts p2p connections from your isp |

I get about 200kb/s total across all my downloads (depending on the time and the amount I'm downloading) and I don't know why anyone uses bitlord as it's just a ripped off version of bitcomet (a very old version of bitcomet) with added adware nasties included with it |

I download 250kb/s at most. I use µtorrent, and I think it's the best client around. |

slow - less than 50kb/s i use bittorent. as a matter of fact its very seldom my downloads reach 20k/s, let alone EVER reaching 50 used to be fast but not anymore. dunno what happened. time to change clients i guess |

I did a lot of web research before deciding to go for utorrent.
I have a 2mb cable connection and my total download rate tends to be 200 to 230k when DLing several files with plenty of peers & seeds. |

christ, if you are actually referring to the bittorrent client, as in not just the protocal but the actual app, bittorrent, please please change clients... not only is it ugly, but it sucks in every aspect... do yourself a favor and get utorrent... |

I don't beleive people who claim such high numbers. They must be using something different than a normal connection.
I think utorrent is the best client for M$, it is too bad it is closed source tho. I use Azureus on Linux because you can't beat all the features in the plugins even tho it is totally bloated.
I just did the math and I've been running azureus for about 6000 hours and downloaded about 450GB so my average is 20k/s which is pretty good considering there is a lot of time I am only seeding. My average upload is about 30k overall. I cap everything because I have to share my connection and if I don't then the BT will slow everyone else down and even itself actually - If I don't cap the upload at around 34kb then it chokes up at around 45kb and then crashes down to 10 and anyone else on the connection can't load webpages normally. I can get very fast downloads depending on the peer situation. Like a new Southpark Episode or LOST it comes as fast as I cap it at - 130-150kb (any higher starts slowing down other computers web pages) but I expect I would get up to 200 otherwise.
I suppose people who pay for the 'fast' high speed connection [who buy into the monopoly phone company scams] will get some benefit, if they have a newer modem, if they have newer wiring in their house [mine is ancient - 50 years old I expect - I'm surprised it works so good actually] but these 800kb and Mb plus connections must be using instiutional connections or maybe are lying.
A long time ago when I was figuring out how to cap still I read a lot of misleading claims of super fast speeds. These were very unhelpful. I didn't realise 35k upload is actually about the max. But I talked to the phone company guy and he confirmed it. For newbies trying to set good limits I suggest you use my numbers and then inch them in whatever direction you prefer to test. Capping is important because maxing out the connection slows down the overall rate. |

It's not just the client... uTorrent is a great client though I really like Bitcommet since it seems to be much better and burrowing through NAT. If you can access your router, go for uTorrent. But you can use anything! The only thing that really matters is configuration. Be sure you have enough half open TCP/IP connections. Shut off all your stuff and then open about 5 very well seeded torrents. Watch the upload speed climb to it's max and then start to fall. Now, figure whatever that top speed was and subtract about 5 off of it. Let's say you have a decent DSL connection (you'll always have better uploads on DSL) you'll probably get up to 100 kbps and then it will start dropping. Set your upload to 95 kbps. You can pretty much leave downloads set to unlimited. With member sites you usually can just cap them off at 5 times the upload. But with Isohunt you probably will only get 2x most of the time unless it's a very well seeded torrent that doesn't have many leechers. In which case you might get some crazy download speeds. (I've seen 1200 kbps before) Your max connections and max half open depends on the connection but you definately want at least 50 half opens and 100 open connections. I've found issues on some routers that caused things to go crazy. Cable is a little different. I've travel alot. At some friends houses I get 20 kbps up and others I've seen 120 kbps on cable. There are lots of variables such as wiring, routers, modems, local traffic or time of day. You will want to leave at least 20 kbps if you're going to continue surfing on the connection so you can turn down the upload speed while your surfing and turn it back up to within 5 of max if you're going to do something else. Another good trick is to always use encryption since that will help you bypass some bandwidth shaping tools. And finally, make sure you have your incoming torrent port open on your router or you just won't make very many connections. Hopefully that helps! Don't believe people that claim it's just your torrent client. There is a lot more to it. And you can easilly get 50 kbps up and on most cable connections with probably 100 kbps on average with some good torrents at 500 kbps +. Anyone that says you can't get that much... probably isn't the best person to listen to. |
