Hello all,
I'm slowly learning this technology, so forgive my ignorance. I am learning though. Need some help with some terms. Is the finished folder, (say a bunch of mp3's, or an album) a torrent? Do users access the finished files or the downloaded .torrent? Must I save the .torrent files when the stuff I wanted is complete and usable? I want to "seed" but I'm not sure what to make available for other users. I don't keep the finished files and folders with the .torrent files that allowed the transfer. Where can I find these simple directions on how to participate without letting the world into my other stuff? Is "sharing" the same as "seeding"?
How do I tell if the files I download are available for uploads to other friendlies? I want to believe
Peace

hi there, to seed just leave the .torrent in your client (utorrent for example) once it gets to the finished or 100% stage. This means you are seeding or sharing the file. Try to leave it doing that till you get to a ratio of about 1:1 or aim for 1:5 which means others can download it too.
You can watch the movie/listen to the .mp3 while this is happening.
This doesnt mean the whole world has access to other parts of your computer, but it cant hurt to get
peerblock
which helps keep unwanted prying eyes away from your downloads.
Hope this helps |

| This guide is for first time uploaders who are very unfamiliar with uploading and need guidance. It is to be used in conjunction with the information already available as this is just the basics. |
it will tell you everything in plain language without any weird jargon. |

Whaa? What ratio, and where is it displayed? Only just now reading your response, I haven't opened bittorrent to look for it. I didn't know TO look for any kind of ratio. About leaving with client, the preference page allows users to create various folders, such as "new downloads", "finished jobs", "torrent storage". I haven't left the finished file [say the song in mp3 format] in the utorrent folder for any time to see if or where the app wants to put it. When it's complete and shows it "seeding", I put it where it belongs in my files [music to music, videos to videos, movies to movies, etc.] Is this wrong? Does doing this prevent me from doing my part and seeding files I get? Do other users need access to my files or just the .torrents? That's what I want to know. btw thanks for your response, every little bit helps.

in short yes when you move the file out of where it's downloaded to it will not seed. So leave it until you have seeded back then move it. |

You can put them back, and re open the torrent file , then it will do a recheck and then it will start seeding again. For somebody who is new to torrent this may be somewhat complicated. I would not beat yourself up over it, your learning and seem to be on the right path. Just take what you've learned an seed back properly the next time. |
