I usually plug the modem straight to my computer and then switch rj-45 cables around when i want to plug my xbox in to my modem. This works fantastically for me but I've decided to go modern and plug my modem into a wireless router and then plug both my xbox and my computer into the router.

The problem is that when my computer is connected my xbox will have a god awful connection and will have a tremendous amount of lag!! (it's actually quite impressive. Not even dialup has that much lag!)

Even when the computers off the connection to xbox will be funny. It will get good speeds in this case but will still have trouble finding a game!

I have 30mb internet so that's not the problem. Clearly is the frickin router but the firewall on it is off! (I think)

Any help would be nice. Thank you

By the way it's a standard run of the mill DLINK wireless router.

could be that you need to setup port forwarding in the wireless router.
http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Set_Up_Port_Forwarding_on_Your_Xbox_360

Give that a try and see if it improves it?

What you mean by lower speed? If your talking about the wireless speed it's 108Mbs/s i think and that's irrelevant anyways because i have both my xbox and PC connected to it with ethernet cable!

Also I thought portforwarding was to do with the firewall which is off. Am i wrong?

And i appreciate the offer imouse but i have a standard netgear one aswell but i get the same problems with it. Also i have 30Mb cable internet! (Yeah boi!!)

i mean the speed of the router itself wookie,as in is it an old 10/100 router or is it a gigabit type router. i have a couple older 10/100 routers that are little more than a glorified switch, and i have newer routers that can be setup to prioritize or specifically direct different types of traffic to different devices.
..port forwarding allows you to direct traffic through a firewall, so you dont have to leave the whole router wide open to the net. and port assignment is a different thing..it points all traffic of the specified type at one port, (not always the good thing to do)

Not sure if it's a gigabit router. I assume it is though as it's is new, I got it from Virgin last week but it's not like a £300 gaming router or anything. I just can't figure out what the problem is. I would trapse around the internets looking for a solution but i really couldn't be bothered!!

I understand that a moderate NAT typecan cause problems but i'm sure that mine is open!!

i think bazzers link is the way to go , espescially if the problem is still there when you take your PC off of the router

I thought that the forwarding port fix for the xbox was to set your nat type to open, which mine already is!!

Do you think if i got a standard hub it would work better? Can you get wireless hub's?

NAT type is about how your router handles traffic.
if your ports isnt forwarded then when traffic comes through, the router has to try all the ports until it finds the right one, its like when your drunk friend gives you a key to his front door and only tells you what street, and no address..you have to try them all, according to a good guess. by the way the PC, the xbox and the router have to have a different last number for the IP address, and the xbox should have a static IP reserved for it, so it always gets that address

Can i set up a static ip on the xbox and then put it in the DMZ?

I assume this will be to the same effect as plugging the xbox directly to the modem! (or does the modem have a firewall or some other sort of protection??)

I'm a bit noobish at routers since i've never used them lol

Same problem here a new router from the ISP.. If one of the laptops use Skype or Torrent Client then other PCs will start lagging(internet) but MSN and IRC will stay working.. something with the DNS..
Skype or Torrents will kill it and it's a new router from the ISP.. wondering why
30MBps here

..DMZ demilitarized zone, it means exposed directly to the internet side of the router, its almost same as plugging direct to the modem, but not exactly, you should only use it for something that is freaked out by going through a firewall, as its not protected, it may be a quick fx and give u an idea if firewall is a problem, but it shouldnt stay that way

DEVILS i have been reading a recent artile about cogeco continuing to throttle P2P aps, at an 80k thresh hold and treats skype BT, and games all the same not sure if this is your problem.. all your machines should use the same DNS, so let the router forward it to the PCs or force a static DNS identical for each machine. wookie should make sure DNS is same on all machines as well.
