I used to download games (as a backup to my original), that often contained a crack and/or key gen, that allowed me to enjoy the game from beginning to end with no probs.

I also used to create .iso (or .mdf) files from discs that i could hire from an awesome video store in Melbourne or borrow from friends (as backup to my originals), using Alcohol 120%.

However I find that these days it is pretty much more trouble and annoyance than it's worth.

Almost every game requires multiple patches after release (Ive found cracked games dont patch properly until new patch is re-cracked). Many games require constant internet connect to actually play, even in single player mode. Even worse is the requirement to install a 3rd party program such as Origin or steam....oooohh I hate Origin, insidious piece of software with hideous UI.

In short, I no longer have the easy opportunity to test run a game before buying it. This has unfortunately led to a slow down of my collection of games. These days I usually just spend my $80 - $100 Australian dollars on the game and hope for the best. Games in Australia are insanely up priced compared to the rest of the world, and $100 isn't anything to sneeze at.

I guess my point is- do many other people have this problem?

I want to take this opportunity to recommend the piece of software Alcohol 120%. I purchased it around 8 years ago. It creates fantastic "images" of games and other files and reformats them into a variety of different formats. It has a lifetime membership, so once you have purchased it, you will always have access to the most recent build to download, unlike other programs that require a renewal after X amount of years.
