It's more down to the Healthy Eating campaigns that are being pushedthan the smoking ban.
Smoking causes heart disease more than it contributes to heart attacks.
Places like McD's are now healthier than ever, gone are the days of burgers dripping with grease and soggy lard fried chips.
People at home are more concious about weight and calories due to tv programmes about weight loss. Gone are the Fanny Craddock days of "half a pound of lard and 1/2 ounce of flour" Now it's all Jamie Oliver cooking without fat.
Smoking is always pushed to the front of any health arguement, yet if everyone quit, the NHS would be hit for six as the revenue generated from smokers is huge. Again, if we all quit, the good ol government would find a way of taxing something else to the hilt.
If you compare Alcohol related deaths, including 3rd parties (drunk driver killing family in a crash etc) then you'll see that Alcohol is far far more dangerous than smoking.
It's crazy that you can go have a quiet drink with your mates and legally drive if your under 30mg limit (i think it's 30mg) yet it's illegal to light up a ciggy. It's ok to use a two way radio (cb, private comms set, ham radio) but smoking a ciggy gets you a £60 fine & 3 points.
If the government is so anti smoking, why not just shut down tobbacco manufacturers and make possession of tobbacco illegal? Beacuse it's a double handed slap, they try to make out that smoking kills etc, but they need the revenue too much to make an out and out stand.
The latest is to legalize upto 6kg of cannabis for personal and sharing use, hell, i like smoking weed, but 6kg without mixing it with tobbacco will rip through my stash in no time, can't be having that. I'd be so hammered that i'd never get anything done Cool

Off Topic (slightly)
If they do legalize the 6kg of weed thing, how would i stand if i flew in from Amsterdam with it, got stopped at customs and said "well, i'm in the UK and have my 6kg" would i get done for it??? Cool Laughing

More likely it's the nations attitude towards a healthy life style.... smoking is not really a major heart attack cause, it is more of a push over the edge. If your already unhealthy and smoke your in the danger zone. I am not a smoker but I know for a fact lack of exercise and being obese is the major cause of heart strain, which can lead to heart attack.

It is nice the heart attack rate has dropped but we also have similar bans and taxes in place here in Australia. I might be wrong, maybe in the UK they smoke way too much. Laughing Razz

Edit: ninja imouse lol

i didn't state it was the only reason for heart attacks, just it was a good point. no doubt the cause of heart attacks are caused by lack of exercise and over eating.

Your original statement did imply that you were stating that smoking was the cause

Your topic is valid, but a little more explanation would be nice. With that it might even be a debates forums topic...

You need to explain your point of view properly. Or your point of view and a rebuttal of the opposing view...

moved to debates

thanks sidarial.

with the Heart Attack Rate down by half we could be seeing a lot of people live longer. i like the fact that Vinnie Jones is the spokesperson for the British Heart Foundation.

not only does it come with an entertaining instructional video, it also comes with audio instructions on how to perform acts such as how to perform CPR, Hard & Fast.
