Some of the things anonymous has done have been really awesome but I wonder if their actions give those that oppose what they stand for steam. I'm kind of curious what everyone here thinks about them and also what yall think some of the negative repercussions of their actions might be?

This is really a subject that I'd like to learn more about so have at it.

Bunch of geek morons who think they are doing the internets a favour when all they are doing is making it worse. Every time they do something re inforces what SOPA says about piracy and the likes. File sharers do not and should not be associated with them in anyway. A percentage of police/judges/lawyers/politicians will always either support p2p or not care about it, no one likes a hacker.

You dont protest against arson by burning things

Although their enemies are my enemies, Their tactics are bullshit, and cowardly. Terrorists with a computer rather than a gun or bomb.

I support most Anonymous initiatives, even do my small part on occasion - though i certainly don't consider myself a part of said group. For the most part the gains are minimal, but on occasion they do reap good results. I would argue SOPA wouldn't have pulled so fast without the heavily co-ordinated recent attacks. Im sure at least some lives have been saved because of the publicity they brought to scientology. Though many involved are obviously juvenile script kiddies, there is no doubt in my mind that the people organising large scale assaults are much more sophisticated(they simply utilise the kiddies enthusiasm). We as Internet users are lucky to have such loosely organised groups.

Im not a big fan of the term terrorist, to me it really has no meaning. All battles are fought with fear. And i dont really see what fear has to do with a DDOS attack, lol.

The only act that I've read about that was truly legit is where they posted the ip addresses of people looking up child porn.

I have to agree with JamesHotwire for the most part. I believe in a free internet but e-terrorism isn't the way to go. It will just rally those opposed and perhaps even some that were on the wall before.

Wouldn't what the MPAA is doing be closer to terrorism? I honestly feel we need to attack these people on every front possible. So far this debate has been mainly ad hominem, with little substance.

Well like I said I do believe in their cause I just think they may be going about it in the wrong way(although I must admit that I don't know what way that would be). I don't disagree with their actions in every instance but I do worry that their actions will have unforeseen repercussions.

It will never work it only serves to make those who oppose them more determined to stop them.

i don't know about the child porn thing, but i do remember them being present for those Wall Street protests, and elsewhere for that matter. you could visibly see them in the crowd with those Guy Fawkes masks, or making public statements [whether their voices were Voxxed or not]. i actually remember hearing their theme song.

I don't know enough about them to really make a good comment... But, I do think they can be classed as a two edged sword... good and bad, they make a stand a protest, help bring to light the battles that are happening over the internet, that a lot of people generally don't even know about, but whether their protests really help the internet public as a whole or actually helps to strengthen the actions of the governments and others.. That's the question...
Would governments etc back down cos of their actions, or fight even harder and nastier? I suppose it depends on the reason behind each individual Anonymous attack and what sort of attack they carry out...

And while I couldn't help but smile reading about their retaliation after Megaupload got clipped, I had more respect for Wiki's protest against SOPA...
But as I said, I don't know enough about them and their actions to really say much more about them... Especially not in regards to terms like "terrorism"... Suffice to say, I am neither a supporter nor am I against them... Time will tell...

Geeks with a cause. Probably spotty teenagers with Macbooks and not a girl in sight (apart from the sticky worn out penthouse under the floorboards of course)
And they've recently hacked the FBI talking to Scotland Yard online crime dept, that'll be 50 years by US court standards, or "you're very naughty boys" by ours lol
