Help for an incompetent noob

This will all sound embarrassingly basic but I do need help with this as I've never used torrents before.

I've downloaded utorrent onto my computer and thought I'd start by trying to download Nero. To be safe I thought I'd try Nero 10 as there didn't seem to be many comments on Nero 11 torrents. Anyway, it was all quite simple at first. I selected a torrent, clicked on 'Download' and sure enough, it started downloading on the utorrent program. The trouble is, once it had finished downloading I didn't have a clue what to do with it. The Nero program wasn't running on my computer and I couldn't find an obvious way of installing it from the download. I opened up the download but the files meant nothing to me. Some seemed to be web addresses because I recognised the Google Chrome icon next to them but most of them couldn't open and wanted me to search the web for a suitable program to open them with.

Do I need to download something else to work with utorrent?

Could someone please give me some idiot proof instructions on exactly what to do to download a program like Nero and get it to work? I stress the 'idiot proof' part of this Smile

are you wanting to watch the movie through your pc or burn onto a dvd.?

if you just want to watch on pc then download vlc.

I'm not particularly wanting to watch any movie. I merely want Nero on my computer so that I can copy discs and burn CD and DVD for mp3, data etc.

Once downloaded... its probably in a Winrar or zip format. (google for application). Once you have uncompressed it... look for a readme file of some sort... it'll give you the installation information.

And if I can make a recommendation... nix the idea of Nero... and try ConvertXtoDVD. It'll do everything you want to do.... with a lot less hassle.

Thanks but I think I'm going to need links for everything I need to download. I'm assuming there are some free downloads for whatever I need to use Isohunt effectively. A link to a full version of Nero (or something better) would also help as there seems to be lots of torrents with descriptions that mean nothing to me.

Welcome to isohunt as already said convertxtodvd is very good and there are many easy good audio converters available. I use switch for converting and ashampoo for burning. As for your problem we need to know what the file format you have downloaded. It is possible it is rar format which you will need winrar to open it. If its a normal video file vlc player will work for you or get cccp codec pack which comes with mpc a very nice player. The google icon you are seeing within your file is likely to be a link to the uploaders page or some other type of info file,it is likely not to be the main file. Right click on the main file or use mediainfo to let us know what your file is you want to play or burn

EDIT- google is your friend. If you cant find links or sites then we will try be more helpful. I also would but im on a pos archos tablet at the min Rolling Eyes

I agree with Fred-Bear...and Nero keeps a tight rein on serials...likely you'll find that any provided are already useless.

I've just downloaded a torrent of WINRAR that seemed to go OK so I guess that's a start Smile

In fairness, I haven't tried using it yet!

I was looking at Nero, basically because I've used it before and I wasn't wanting to complicate things by having to learn a new system. I also know that Nero is like an 'all in one' solution for me as I can use it to burn CD and DVD; copy discs, create data discs, video discs, mp3 discs etc., all without using other programs. That isn't to say I'm unwilling to try something new if it will do the same things just as easily, I was just wanting to explain why I'd gone to Nero instead of anything else.

Anyway, I'll try downloading again and let you know what the files say.

OK, so let's say that Nero is not my best option to do what I want. That being the case, what torrent should I search for that will:

- Copy discs
- Burn data discs
- Burn mp3
- Burn video
- burn whatever else I may need but can't think of Very Happy

Failing any alternative suggestions, I've downloaded a copy of Nero. I was worried about the limited amount of feedback on newer versions so I've installed Nero 7 instead and it seems to work fine.

I connect to the Internet using AT&T Uverse and it seems they have found a way to block torrents. Is this possible or could it be something else.
