Hollywood was expected to appreciate the love letter send by France.
Yay for Meryl,Woody and Alexander! Very Happy

A quick joke for all of you Meryl haters.
If there is ever gonna be a film about Michael Jackson's life who is gonna play the leading role? Meryl Streep. Rolling Eyes

ever since The Artist won big at BAFTAS i've been keen on how many they'd take away at the Oscars. now i know 'silent' is making its comeback. i really do hope to see more of that genre.

Personally i like to see actors/directors/films etc that i like, getting recognition they deserve. Not just judged by $$$ money and box office returns. But by an award that says they are the best of their category.

Some people hate it. And yes it does give questionable awards out some years, while mysteriously leaving others in the cold. There have been controversies such as stars refusing to accept awards, and perceptions that awards have been handed out in past for sentimental reasons, rather than based on actual performance. Then there is the whole issue people have with some films seemingly aimed at oscar season with marketing campaigns to promote, prompting fears some films get recognition based on the amount pumped into marketing, rather than the actual content. And I agree with alot of above.

But, overall, I still enjoy seeing what wins. I have never agreed with every decision, and actually probably disagree with more than i agree with in terms of what should win what each year. But hey, theres no accounting for taste i guess Very Happy

Dont think have ever watched the show in recent years, bar maybe when i was much younger. No interest in the "glossy event" side of things or the red carpet and performances on night itself. I do like however checking out the results the next day, and hope that my favourite films and performances of the year get the recognition they deserve Wink

^^Good points...

Rango!!!! Very Happy (made me happy!)

It's good to see how your own choices match with oscars. I missed it because they showed the live at 6 AM in here when I was probably chewing my pillow's head off. After all those award shows you literally come to a point where you can easily figure out mainstrem's/critics' taste in movies. I was unaware of those documentaries and short films nominated for the oscars and watched them. Those were darn good. Award shows enhance your watchlist in a way.

I'm happy 'The Artist' did well in both the Oscars and BAFTA's as the film is probably one of the best films made in years and shows just how much can be done without the dreaded cgi. A real gem and breath of fresh air Smile

God knows why 'Rango' won as it was pretty awful in both looks and entertainment.

As for the event I feel its unrequired, seeing multimillionaires give themselves/each other awards for doing their rather easy 'job', only on very rare occasions do I think an actor be recognised for their performance in a film, at the end of the day the films are created by many skilled people that aren't paid or recognised nearly enough.

As if the money, fame, lavish life style, God-like status, immortality, adoration, perks, freebies etc...aren't enough that you have to all get together and give each other fancy awards for not that much of a hard's day work whilst trying to show off even more how rich and famous you are by wearing outfits that are more expensive than most peoples homes and trying to play it all down by pretending its just part of your job.

I couldn't agree more, bazzer.
It's all about recognition for people that have worked really hard to produce art.And as som ace already stated they also introduce films that most people don't know their existence.Really, how many would have seen 'The Artist' if it wasn't for the Oscars?

Cinema is not only actors. Wink
