Hey everyone,
I don't know how to use Tor. Would it be possible to set it up as a proxy server to download from torrents such as public, and private? I am a member of one private site. I'm not sure if it's really possible to use Tor as a proxy? Or even what and how Tor is used? I tried to use it, but it didn't connect. If it can't be used for download as using it for a proxy, then my honest question is, what is it used for? I'm thinking people are using it for proxies? Or am I wrong?
Thank you! |

it is possible, but generally the tor people dont like that, as it attracts attention. tor is a strongly encrypted "IP tunnel" that is primarily intended for covert comunication from censored countries, it is the large files that is undesired, as the tor system is running under the radar in most situations, and when huge portions of bandwidth are indecipherable all sorts of nasty people want to know WTF |

I'm sorry, but I'm still not understanding. I know you said Tor is an IP tunnel. Does an IP tunnel act the same way as a proxy server where I'll be anonymous as for hiding my IP? |

it wont really hide your IP, but it will make it difficult to trace. it will hide the information being sent, so if you want to complain about a dictator whithout getting taken to a reeducation camp tor is for you. The way any proxy hides your IP depends on the server administrators, cooperating or not, and how much of a pain it is to find the IP leading to your account
this is from the Tor project wiki

Bittorrent and Tor
Just google for Bittorrent and Tor. What you will find is ethical advice "do not use Tor with Bittorrent as Tor isn't designed for that and can't handle the load" and technical advice.
use proxy settings to torify
use socks4a to prevent DNS leak
What's the problem with this?
no one cared to use a packet sniffer to see if it's working
the application does not honor the proxy settings
the protocol itself will leak your IP |

Thank you! I was planning on using Tor to make it hard to trace for both uploading and download torrents.
Does it sound like it's for me? If it is then how do I set it up and use it? |

bittorrent will leak your real IP just because of how Bittorrent works |

Can you please advise of anonymous proxy server list since Tor won't work for me? |

nothing is 100% ever, what tor does is makes a tunnel so you can move info encrypted through a pinch point, and access the internet without being spied on like a "man in the middle".
an "anonymous" proxy strips your IP off your packets and substitutes one from its purchased IP range. so the proxy server knows your real IP and if leaned on enough will give it out. they prefer not to do this so they just fold up and go somewhere else when they get too many agent asking for things from them, or they get shut down. generally proxies should be paid for, or they are kinda useless, but dont ever pay extreme amounts in advance, cuz if they split town when they feel the heat you lose. do a search for poxies if you want one they are all close to the same thing, be Carefull off malwares! there are enough of those, i myself dont use a proxy, i have a very advantageous situation with numerous hotspots around me |

It sounds like I probably won't trust a proxy.
Are you saying the IP tunnel with Tor is what I'm asking for with no spies, so I can download? |

have you heard of peerblock?
and your(users) own behaviour is a large part of what causes trouble.
if you DL copyrighted materials there are computers pretnding to be sharing and they will connect and DL from you then they have direct evidence the material is on your account. peerblock uses a list to stop hostile computers from connecting or being connected to by your machine. you have to keep this list updated, then dont download copyright material, and if you cant do that then dont download material that is just released yesterday, and dont ever think that any plan or scheme is 100%.
you can use a proxy it helps, but dont trust it is a good plan |

you are basically asking the same things over and over and getting the same answers.not sure what you are wanting but if you want a proxy that works you'll need to pay for it,a free one just won't do the job.
| Code: |
| http://www.easy-hide-toasted spam/ |
that has a free try out (i think 3 days) and then costs thirty bucks US a year and you can put utorrent into it.it has no effects on speed of download and you can use
toasted spam
to make sure that the IP is being changed

I'm sorry for asking over and over again.
Alright, here's the reason and honest reason I can't go with paid.
I live in a group home and it's for the MR that needs help. They hold on to my money, so if I request money for something like this then they will turn it down. That's why I have to do everything without them knowing about it. The "free" was the closest I can think of by doing this on my own. I do have a PC that they don't talk about, but money to bypass torrents then they will say something. I tried it two days ago to get a seedbox, but my request failed. I hope you really understand.
Will you please forgive me? I want to do this, but they won't give money for this. |

Proxy proxy proxy.....
What is it with proxy ?
There is only one solution to hide your IP and that is NOT to use your IP.
All other so called solutions are useless attempts to hide your IP.
It's just re-routing bits and bytes all over the internet passing all kinds of proxies, servers and gateways of owners you don't know and not knowing what they track and log when your bits and bytes are passing their servers.
Because eventually all those bits and bytes has to come to YOUR REAL IP if you like it or not.
And if you do and you actually find a working proxy.
Do you really think that they let you pass several gigabytes through their systems with the risk being sued without some kind of payment ?
The proxy owners needing much bandwidth and harware.
Someone has to pay for that....
And php111 it's not personal, it's just my opnion on what I think about proxies.
Edit:@php111 I'm a foreigner and it took me 15 minutes to come up with this so I didn't read your post above my post.... |

Alright, let's forget about proxies?
I don't know if this is true, or even if it will work? I was reading that people get busted more for uploading rather then downloading? In order to fix that. In my case it's uTorrent, go into the settings and zero out the sharing meaning disable, or cut it off that means the person will only download. If that's the case then we might have reached a solution. |
