I hear ya. I'm not impressed with this release, was really hoping for more, it's not much improved since developer. And the fish at start up keeps taunting me. I really have no use for the their silly apps, but should one be opened by mistake you can turn them off from task manager. ALT X closes out useless windows. Bugs i've noticed thus far are snipet tool is fuct'd unless you like snaping pics of the apps screen. And why I would need 6 gig's of pagefile when I already got 24 gigs of ram, I guess only MS knows?
The tweaks I normally apply to 7 still work, haven't tried them all yet, currently I'm running it on a 32 GB drive and I got it down to taking 9 GB after disabling the pagefile, and the hiberfile . If you want to take ownership of files to make fixes ect. copy this to note pad and save as a .reg then double click and you now have a take ownership option in the context menu.
| Code: |
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas]
@="Take Ownership"
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas\command]
@="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
"IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas]
@="Take Ownership"
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas\command]
@="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
"IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t" |
To remove take ownership from context menu
| Code: |
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\runas]
|

That would be like using a sledge hammer to crack a walnut.
Windows is fine to do that to, some programs like AV software don't like having their permissions messed with.
EDIT:
Rachmaninoff it's the little down arrow with the line above it. Then scroll down to minimize ribbon.

ownership of your AV should be whatever user installed. I just assign the drive to admin group, as i am in that group. I would never assign permissions to a user though, always group. And of course always disable simple file sharing, its horrible |

Microsoft say that's its no longer essential have it or need DVD / blue ray playing software in the PC. That less that 6 % use a PC for DVDs / blue rays and that most people are getting downloads and streams.. |

Sounds like an exuse to strip an OS of features to save on licenses - as M$ has to pay someone if they include that in their OS. Ill laugh so hard if they strip out such a basic feature like DVD playback, but it wouldnt surprise me. We will be back to the XP days, an OS that couldnt even play dvds lol |

Win 8 is a "managed OS" meaning its designed to cut the user off from owning the system. it uses java like byte code, to secure itself, and hides access to the API routines, and uses countermeasures to remotely disable, or delete things MS dont get off on. I think win7 will be my final MS OS |

It seems as though MS has learned from it's past mistake namely, keeping an OS on the shelf for too long and updating it as to make it so compatible that people just don't want to change.
That's what happened with XP. If I recall, XP (before SPs) was not that nice to work with. Allot of changes and not that compatible in itself.But, once SP2 came out, that changed the ball game for XP. It changed so much in fact, that it should have been an Complete OS in itself. MS missed the mark on that one.
ME , I think was sort of the spring board for XP as was Vista to 7. But, instead of updating Vista to a point where it would as stable and compatible as XP SP2 was, (and losing money in the process) they decided to bring out Windows 7 and keep the money making machine going.
I don't think you will ever see a OS stay on the shelf for as long as XP has in the future. |
exarctly!(i spelled that wrong on purpose) 'they' really should just charge a subcription(i'm leaving all my mispellings in)(misspelling is spelt(spelled) wrong too!) to their service and call it windows the way some *nix stuff does their paid-for help "stuff - then do "core" update fees occasionally or something ... i dunno, i'm no business major, one of you young geniouses(wow really? geniuses, no o) , this is a mmulti-million dollar idea here, go ahead and steal it, it's my gift to you, just remember to kick me down some green or red wine
and cF, i've had 'issues' with my rig and win 7 too ...
johnno23 was here - made a better post, but still i'm just sayin', if it ain't broke, don't fix it - but win7 is a pain, i'm thinking of paying for windows 8 - then i have a right to complain about how it doesn't work
man their beta is alpha

Yeah I tried this release for all of 20 minutes before the uncontrollable urge to reformat took a hold of me. I think the best thing to do here with this is pick out the few improvements they've made and patch it into 7. |
