Simple question

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to download youtube videos as either mp3 files, WMV files or indeed, other alternatives. I used to use ATube Catcher and it was perfect for what I wanted but the latest version seems to have a number of problems with it so I need an alternative. Can you suggest anything good?

I've tried many and prefer the version from DVDVideosoft. It's freeware and can be downloaded seperately or as part of their multi-tool package. The multi pack has some decent converters etc, but there's a lot included that i'd never use. Personal choice etc etc

When you download youtube vids you can only download them in one of two formats, a .flv (thats what the streaming file is) or what ever the original file was, in youtubes case its normally a .mp4. Any downloader that claims to download the files as an mp3 is actually converting them on the fly to a mp3. So in answer to your question no, they will either download the .flv or .mp4 and convert it to an mp3 or download the the .flv or .mp4 as it is.

The thing I use is download helper and if I need to covert it to mp3 I have the software to do it

You could use a site like keepvid to download from youtube in flv format and then just use a free flv converter to get them into mp3/mp4.

As far as I know are youtube video's just a FLV container format with an audio stream and video stream.

The developers site does not exists anymore but the program is still available on the net.

FLV Extract

Just download a FLV and de-mux it with FLV Extract, no need for re-encoding when FLV contains a mp3.
