I was downloading a torrent and then a message popped saying it was from an FBI agent and that the IP and files had been logged. You couldn't exit out of this window and the process was svchost.exe. The instant messages addressed me by first name (although same as computer user name) and demanded explanation to avoid arrest. Has anyone else encountered this?

Best pack your bags and runaway to a small island and go by a another name.
Though I can help you out for a small fee. Shall we say 1 million usd straight into my dodgey bank account. And I'll make it all go away
Or just use peer block or something to that effect. And don't try and download that file again.
I'll check my bank tomorrow yeah

Hey jconway
google “svchost.exe”, there are several links explaining what it is and how to get rid of it.
Have any problems come back and someone will be able to help you out
Yes and from what I understand it is required system process. I thought it was weird a message window would randomly pop up with a system process. I was able to kill it and then remove the torrent. What do you make of this? Actual FBI or scare tactic from MPAA or something like that

Some idiot is maybe on the same network as you and maybe used a service called "Messenger" to make that popup.
Because he/she is using your computer name.

Yea hopefully it's something like that although it didn't look anything like like the windows messenger windows that I have seen.
The window was strange... no way to exit it out of it only an area to reply back and a send button. When I logged off my computer and logged back on it said something like "I told you not to logoff <name>, what are you doing? If you don't explain yourself were going to have to process your arrest."

Thanks for the advice. I already re-formatted my system right after it happened. Nothing else has popped up today. The thought of a trojan doesn't really scare me, just the thought that it could be legitimate threat of arrest (which no one seems to think). Although that is kinda creepy... the last two weeks I did notice that my webcam indicator light came on randomly a few times
