For the complete noob, 2 links to get started:
Fserves
(or File Servers): http://www.kojin-asylum.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/irc_guide/downloading2.htm
XDCC
s: http://www.kojin-asylum.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/irc_guide/downloading3.htm
If you are using windows, the most popular client by far is
mIRC
.
HydraIRC
seems to have an advanced interface, but I haven't used it so I don't know how usable it is.
In search results on this site, triggers with "xdcc" in them are XDCC packets. Otherwise they are Fserve triggers. *censored* triggers are protected fserves, you will have to look around the channel to see who has the file you searched for.
Time-outs on DCC sends are a common error, which can be caused by:
1. Firewall on either side (you or the one sending you the file)
2. Wrong port for the connection
There is no simple answer to such error, best is to ask around the channel or the one sending the file for help.
That's about it. This is a basic guide, reply to this if you have something to add / change.
Note: although isoHunt.com is a files search engine and this is a download guide, IRC is foremost designed for "chat". Although there are numerous channels with XDCC / Fserve ads flying by (hence the existence of this search engine), don't mistaken IRC as a typical file sharing network. Its main purpose is for chat, and still is. |

Mirc is one of the dload tools I would love to get to grips with (and slowly Im learning)
My question is......in the torrent/irc search it comes up with the details of the xdcc. Do I just click that and the dload starts (assuming I have my client confgiured correctly?) Unless there is aof course an error due to firewalls etc as you stated which will need to be addressed.
Thanks

hehe, the basics isn't hard actually. just
1. install mIRC
2. poke around the Options dialog (this is where you'll get lost, but just config basic things like your nick, and the folders to d/l to in the DCC options)
3. when u click irc:// links in the search results here, it opens mIRC automatically (if it's properly installed) and ask you if you want to join the requested network / channel. Say yes.
4. If you used IE, just paste in the string (trigger) already copied when you click the link. Otherwise manually copy the bold string under the Trigger column.
enjoy but servers come and go, watch on mIRC's Status window, it tells you if you msged someone online or not. |

Yes indeed!
www.ircmadeasy.com
This site has instructions (and pictures!) for mIRC, Invision, SysReset, Polaris, Excursion, FireServ, and an faq. The site is geared to Invision as that is what the author (and his channel) uses, but the help for all above scripts is great. |

I finally managed to get mirc up running and better yet DOWNLOADING!!
Thanks to IH and Frenchie for the helping hints. Also found this site to be of great help in setting up save location etc...http://dooyoo-uk.tripod.com/mirc/mirc.htm goes into each option individually with specifics for how to do what - GREAT
Final question's (as I am getting quite good at all that ls dir get stuff!!
If my pc reboots (while dloading) do I lose all my queues? Even with reconnect on disconnect Im guessing that that means only connect to the mirc server you were on not the bot/person dloading from?
are xdcc dloads diff from 'normal' dloads where you have to ask for the send packet then select the dir then get each file individually? on an xdcc dload do you just send the ctcp trigger and thats it?
I would say if it was possible to add into the sticky how to dload (as in what get ls cd dir means and how it works?) |

there are guides around the web for all the fserve commands so i didn't bother explaining them ^^ Here's a mini guide
Common Fserve commands:
ls = queues: list the queues on the fserve. your nick would be on the list if you queued it.
get <filename>: queue the file
cd / dir: Change Directory and DIRectory listing. Standard DOS style commands.
for xdcc, you just paste the trigger and that's it. The bot will PM you periodically with your queue status.
If you do a reboot, try to get back on the channel as fast as you can. Scripts usually checks whether nicks on queue are online / on channel, so if you can get back on before they re-check the nicks then you'll stay on the queue. Just do "queues" on fserves and a certain trigger for xdcc (read the xdcc ad on channel) to see if you are still on queue. |

When you are on a Channel and scrolling what's offered, remember or jot down the number of the DL you want. Then note the Handle of the person offering. Scroll to right above that person's first numbered offer and look for the instructions on how to request the DL (sometimes these instructions are at the end of the person's list) Highlight just the command. Point and left click where your message goes (by the left border at the end of the scrolling). Right click and the command you highlighted will be pasted there. If you highlighted exactly and carefully to the point that says "#" or something similar, type in the number you remembered or jotted down right next to "#" then hit enter. If you are like me, after doing this about a half dozen times and getting error messages, you get the feel for what's expected of you and BINGO, a window opens up showing your request being downloaded to your MIRC file.
I wonder if I remembered this right? I wonder if this will help anyone? |
