The Innkeepers (2011)
Low budget horror about two bored hotel workers with an interest in the paranormal in a hotel which is closing down. Really slow burn to the degree it's almost not horror for the most part, focuses on the relationship of the workers and has a light hearted feel which is fine, overall horror package was hit and miss for me.

Warriors of the Rainbow (2011)
based on the true story of the tribal headhunters who fought the Japanese invasion of Taiwan from about 1900 up to the 1930's. A lot of comments compare this to "Last of the Mohicans" which in terms of cinematography and rough storyline it does have a lot of similarities, only this is a lot more graphic in the action scenes, expect to see many decapitations. It comes in two parts running at over four hours, at first I thought it's a bit of a tall order to fill that up but the story is engaging and told at just the right pace and there's depth to the main characters. CGI is sub par but there's not much of it, no doubt the whole thing has been over influenced by Hollywood but it's an impressive looking sprawling epic and worth a look.

Real Steel reminds me of those Rock'em Sock'em Robots that were popularized back in the 20th century. i kinda guess that's what the filmmakers were marketing towards. |

I agree. Great film. When I first watched it; prior to when I saw the cover it did not look that good but when it was on... |

Loose Cannons (1990)
Looking for an interesting combination in casting? well look no further, Dan Aykroyd, Gene Hackman and Dom Deluise head this cop buddy flick. This film followed on from the popularity of the 'Lethal Weapon' franchise as did many others of the era and they are all pretty much the same. The unique carrot on a stick here is the casting really.
It certainly is an interesting choice, 80's motor mouthed quirky comedy legend Aykroyd, hard assed no nonsense Hackman and farcical spoof maestro Deluise (of the Mel Brooks/Gene Wilder spoof pack) all thrown together. This is the films downfall basically, the three leads are totally incompatible and never gel.
The film is your usual regular mismatched cop duo comedy/thriller with all the regular mismatched cop duo moments and sequences you would expect. Action is slow (with Deluise it has to be) and uninspiring and the attempted funny moments are just poor. Aykroyd is suppose to have a multiple personality disorder which you would think could be comedy gold...it isn't, its embarrassing to watch.
Pretty much a complete failure on all aspects, Hackman just doesn't fit into this kind of lunacy and it shows. Tries to be along the same lines as 'See No Evil, Hear No Evil' with Wilder and Pryor but doesn't come close. |

Finally,
a film worth mentioning, after all the crap I've seen lately...
*WARNING*
It's a drama,more like a punch in the stomach.
Don't watch it if:
-you're looking for something to amuse yourself. This ain't for pop corn.
-you're feeling depressed. You'll go down deeper.
-you're feeling happy. It'll screw your happiness.
Do watch it though if:
-you like mockumentaries.
-you've missed some good acting.Adrien Brody at his best.
-you prefer films better than movies. |

Just came back after watching Prometheus.... quite disappointing Another sequel, or i should say prequel to Alien. Ridley Scott should now move away from the Alien mythology... enough is enough !!!! |

Coriolanus (2011)
So I saw the poster for this film with Fiennes being all bald and blooded seemingly going for a Brando 'Apocalypse Now' look and I was intrigued.
I didn't really know of this play by a certain famous English playwrite but kinda got the impression it may have been pumped up with action and fighting for the modern era. The poster along with write ups saying the story had been updated tempted me greatly.
First thoughts of course are the two main leads played by Fiennes and Butler, surely this would have some kick assery involved? surely 'King Leonidas' would be storming around Rome screaming at folk
through his Scottish facial hair as he gunned them down in a hail of bullets and claret? well no.
This is in fact the full Shakespearean play (as far as I know) simply updated to modern times. So its modern day Rome with modern SWAT team-like soldiers for Fiennes whilst Butler leads an army of terrorist-like rebels against Rome, the media run amok in the middle. Some sections play out like real time media coverage but its mostly dialog between characters on sets/locations with the full verbal force of Williams writings.
There is no real added action or violence bar one sequence near the start, a bit of gun fire, a small grapple between Fiennes and Butler. Most of the story is hinted at through news coverage.
So Fiennes hasn't made this into a testosterone filled fight flick but stuck to the pure formula of Shakespeare. All that has been done is set the play within our present day with everything in the play updated to how we would see it. He could of done it the other way also and made a totally different film but keeping the essence ( eg.'Romeo + Juliet') which could of worked but respect to his decision.
Honestly this really wasn't my cup of tea, there is nothing wrong with the film, the acting is superb from all, it bewilders and amazes me they manage to learn the lines! Unless you know the play and follow the dialog you may find yourself lost haha the plot is relatively easy to follow but I had no clue what the characters were saying most of the time, its mainly guess work and body reactions I looked out for hehe.
Yep as I mentioned before its all the original bards writings and sayings throughout so get your Shakespearean to English dictionaries out folks. Fans of Shakespeare will enjoy I'm sure, how can you not enjoy Fiennes in full flow? personally I didn't like the modern day setting it just didn't look or feel right for me, ancient Rome will always look/feel better in my opinion. Also the old English Renaissance script is too much too swallow after about 10 minutes.
Solid stuff, cannot fault the acting skills involved to bring the play/story to life but I feel it serves more as an educational piece for students or lesson for bidding thespians. Without sounding too sacrilegious there is a good storyline here which could easily be made into a more 'fun' film for the masses, if you get me (Baz Luhrmann already proved this) but I digress again.
A well performed 'piece' if you will that will satisfy the right audience. |
