hi guys,

new to the forum.allow me to apologise if this is posted in the wrong place.

I'm looking for some help with a problem.

I am using isohunt to find downloads and then using utorrent to download them.
From about 7am to 6pm I regularly get a download speed of about 1.2MB/s which I reckon is pretty quick. It means that a 90 minute film is downloaded in about 40 minutes or so.

Here's the problem though...

from 6pm to just after midnight my download speed completely diasappears. I am lucky to see about 15kb/s. the weird thing is that my son still gets a download speed of about 850kb/s during this 6 hour period.

Last night we both tried to download a movie..his speed was good..mine was non existant. I left utorrent running and watched what happened just after midninght. The speed went from 12kb/s to 1.3MB/s within a minute.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why this is happening..and more to the point..is there any way to fix it

thanks in advance.

you only pay for so much bandwidth, you son is using it up and you are getting what's left when he's online.

I could understand that except for the fact that we tried a little experiment. He turned his laptop off..I turned off the pc and then re-started and tried to download a copy of a film and got the same result...about 10kb/s.

Tried to download the same film using the same seeds/leechers at 10am the following morning and got the usual 1.2MB/s

The problem appears to be that my pc won't accept p2p downloads between 6pm and midnight...but the laptop does !!!!!

this is an exaggeration but he has to keep his offline when you are online,he can browse and do some simple stuff but much else and he's going to be using up bandwidth..if he is line in to his pc and you are wireless it will have an even more pronounced effect.

my brother lived here for a while.his was line into the router and mine was wireless.i had a hard time staying connected let alone download when he was downloading anything.

if he is doing anything like downloading, playing games, etc online he is getting the bandwidth.

there's really no other reason for it unless one of you set your client to only be used during certain hours.like he went into scheduler of your client on your pc and set yours to not download during certain hours so he could download and game, xbox, whatever.

the problem is the same whether his laptop is on or not.

I do know that a lot of providers 'throttle back' during peak hours..but I would expect to get some speed..say 100kb/s or 200kb/s. The scheduler on utorrent is set for 24 hours a day/seven days a week so that isn't the problem

I can start a download at 5.56pm and it goes like crazy and then 5 minutes later..nothing.

I can start a download at 11.59pm and get nothing and 5 minutes later ...wow...

as I say..it's the same whether the laptop is on or not.

weird doesn't do it justice..

have you checked your router ???
you can set time slots for connection speeds. Maybe your router is at fault or might need resetting.

no..the router is fine.

there is 'something' on the computer that just shuts down utorrent from 6pm to midnight.

there has to be an explanation..surely !!

one explanation could be a combination of things

isp throttling
the versions of utorrent
his laptops utorrent setting are better setup then your computer
difference between hardware ie, different ethernet cards or network adapters
wifi Vs cable, although if your computer is cabled to the router I would expect you would get best rates
age of the 2 computers ie, newer hardware could be better / faster

other than scheduling setting in utorrent, I wouldn't expect power management to have anything to do with it, and I don't know of any other thing that would do what you describe.
the only real way to find out would be to strip each computer down and look at each piece of hardware

sorry I can't give you a fix but could be an explanation

only suggestions I have are, it's you son right, commandeer his laptop between that time frame Very Happy
or plan your downloading to suite the best speeds Sad

lol

he is 6' 2" and 25 years younger..so that isn't going to happen.

and I'm definately not going to strip down the hardware.

the only option is to time the downloads..its 12.18am now and the film is coming down at a rate of 1.3MB/s...that's as fast as it ever is.

as previously said...its just weird that for that 6 hour slot it effects my pc but not the laptop.

I see your problem there Laughing I don't suppose he's open to being asked nicely then?

yep it's weird, but hey, even routers can do weird thing too
in our office at home we have 2 desktops, MINE and the other one for the family.
both are cabled to the router but every time they turn it on my transfer rate takes a massive drop

nothing like your experiencing

my computer is newer, faster but the other gets the best transfer rates
I figure I pay the bill I get the best so swapped cables. nar, didn't work

so were back to I pay the bill you lot kiss-off while I'm on line, but then I only got 2 daughters and I'm bigger Laughing
now with wireless connections they and the boss lady just pinch it under my nose Sad

dad's ah, stuck at the bottom of the food chain around the home Laughing

happy hunting mucky1957
