i have the following installed on my computer:

creative mediasource V5
wmp V7 i HATE 11
caimp 2.1 (slowly taking over)
itunes (i hate macs, dunno why i have it)
rythmbox (recompiled experiment)
VLC (V. 2.something)

anyway, right now i mainly use creative media source, because it's lightweight, it integrates with my sound card flawlessly, it looks good, and works very well, crash-free.

i did dig up cAIMP. this is a lightweight music player built on winamp. it works pretty good, but so far my playlists hate me using it. it also has .xm player, so i'm impressed with it. looks cool too.

VLC for movies. can't beat it's compatibility.

basically, i'm looking for something with lightning fast file searching, few bells and whistles, and plays well with other ram hungry programs running (like blender and photoshop) as well as mass compatibility with most files (including .xm and .ogg)

anyone have a good suggestion?

I'm with the OP, Creative Media Source 5 most of the time, also Foobar2000 (only one I've found that can play multichannel flac files), and Winamp occasionaly.

I am shocked and appalled at the popularity of Windows Media Player so far. I can't stand it.

VLC for the win!!! It's my prediction that it will get more votes here in the end.

I do like WinAmp for music, but to be honest, it's just for the milkdrop visualization (which I believe deserves some recognition).

WMP is my favorite for movies and Winamp "LITE" if the best for music.

Well, I'm with everyone here for VLC. Been using it for a couple of years and I won't go back. I've used Evil Player for the last little while just because it's easy and simple and small, but I've been using MediaMonkey more and more often lately, mostly because I've organized my music collection.
