And the site needs money for a new server. What a dilemma.

With traffic going up in a straight line and the database getting corrupted often, the site desperately needs a dedicated server and fatter hosting.

As you probably noticed, I've put up 4 text ads up at the top left. I will not resort to banners unless I have to, and pop-ups ugly and useless (popup killers).

I've hand picked these 4 ads, these are stuff I would buy myself. I hope we all have similar tastes Laughing

The Photon light is especially worth mentioning: this little LED keychain is _amazingly_ bright ! You can use it to read in complete darkness. The newest version (3) has all sorts of fancy features, like strobing, intensity, setting memory, etc. Check it out! They make great gifts too!! (hint hint)

If you bought something, besides my kudos, come back to this post (click the Comments link below) and vote on which product is the best!

NOTE : if you are involved with web hosting and would like to help out isoHunt, please drop me an email so we can discuss further. I've designed this site to use minimal bandwidth by professional standards, but it is CPU intensive.

UPDATE : Donation now at $18.66 (fees deducted). Big thanks to those who donated.
If $100 can be collected each month (including commisions from the ads) then the site can move to a new server. Thanks for your support.

I think we all get bored on ads but as they generate money, we can't do without them...or are we willing to pay the costs for Isohunt ourselves Question

I understand the need for ads to generate revenue, but do we really need these ads that flash and make noise? Every friggin time I go to any isohunt page someone tells me I have been selected to receive a free ipod. At this point, I should personally own Apple's entire production line for a month. Its really annoying to be listening to some music while browsing isohunt, and then suddenly hearing this obnoxious voice that I can't turn off.

Are the ads paying for just being shown or have they to be clicked?

As I wrote in " Announcement: Bad ads, report here " http://isohunt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=100320 : its a dilemma: the ads on isohunt didn't bother me (and have lower annoyance potential then most other sites), as long as they aren't a security risk.

Can't you have a contract with your ad company excluding those trojan sites at all, because otherwise your site's reputation would suffer
EDIT/ADD: and is a risk to your user?

Odin, IH spends lots of time hassling the ad people about it. Any problems are reported to them as soon as we find them. Crying or Very sad

I can imagine the hassle!! And there are better things to do then tackling those creeps!
Are they responding to the things IH tells them?

What would be the best way to go? I just added the adblock plugin (for now) 'cause I was really annoyed by being redirected so many times (which was caught by "noscript" so no damage).

What do you do? Do you block the ads or do you leave them unblocked?

Well we could, shut down all Newspapers, radio stations, television networks, the internet, mailing services, bill boards. Or have everyone pay membership to all these services so they are user supported.

Hmm, guess not, people want shit for free, the ads pay for it, learn to live with it. Wink

While we all may dislike ads for various reasons the simple fact remains that they have become a integral part of our life. You can't watch tv without watching an ever increasing amount of ads (unless you dvr your shows like I do Very Happy), you can't read a magazine without browsing past ads, they're even all over the streets and on buses.

Ads are what allow sites that don't have unlimited funding to continue to run. If you are completely dead set against seeing ads, then I suggest you donate to the site. Every bit helps. If you don't want to donate, then you might want to grab a good ad blocker. I can't recommend anything for Internet Explorer, but I can say that there are a good number of great add-ons for Firefox that accomplish this.

Personally, I do not care at the moment if this site contains ads or not. If it helps the site, I am all for it. Especially when they advertise things like proton lights Cool. I am so used to seeing ads that it doesn't really bother me. Pop-ups are another story though. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Here's hoping that everything goes for the better! Very Happy
