I have realized that a lot of people do not know what Indie music is. Technically, it stands for any independent bands, with no record affiliations, but it is also a musical genre. I will name some bands that you can look into if you want, because although some freaks dont like it, many of you would.

I listen almost exclusively to indie music, it's hard to get friends to understand it.
For absolute favorite, I'd say I can't live without Metric. They are awesome live... *swoon* |

Good bands dude, alot of them are the staples of indie, and a few i haven't heard, if you're starting indie tho you should check those out along with sufjan stephens, iron and wine, nada surf, jose gonzalez, and of course..the decemberists...
if you are honestly into underground and up and coming indie I first suggest to you Fleet foxes...but more importantly you need to get the indie rock playlist, if you haven't already, its put out by the dj from ah.fm and he is the man when it comes to indie rock, here is the link (http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/41667857/indie+may?tab=summary) for May's playlist, its a great playlist...
I've been waiting for someone else on here into Indie, or atleast to find them as i'm sure there are others here, we'll have to get some good discussions going dude, along with a thread to mention truly worthy bands of mention....
as of late( the past month) I've really been into wild sweet orange, animal collective, fleet foxes, murder by death, rogue wave and tokyo police club(new stuff) let me know what you're into.... |

when i think of indie i think of James, The Stone Roses, The happy Mondays, The Charlatans etc its a massive genre with some real greats as well as a whole lot of crap. Im totally out of touch I guess, would you put Kasabian as indie? they good and the Kaiser Chiefs, i quite like them.
Ive stopped trying to figure out what indie is these days, i mean how do you put franz ferdinand in the same catagory as james? I alike both but cant see any similarities at all in the playing styles.
Keep meaning to check out Def ?Jam for Clutie heard lots of good things about them.
oh yeah, "I Am Clute" are well good. |

There's so many subgenres within indie its nearly impossible to categorize everything under one heading.
Death on wings? are you from Florida? I was just wondering because Band Marino is from my hometown and they are pretty much only well known here haha. I saw them opening for Nada Surf last weekend, it was a sweet show all around.
Anyways, this is how I usually subdivide my indie rock, and I'm only going to mention bands that are still regularly active to avoid clutter:
British/Swedish/European in general: Kaiser Chiefs, Libertines, Phoenix, The Concretes, Shout Out Louds, Belle & Sebastian, BLUR, British Sea Power, The Futureheads, the Long Blondes, a shitload more. Britain and Sweden have great scenes at the moment.
Canadian: the Arcade Fire, the Stills, the New Pornographers, Islands, Broken Social Scene, Metric, etc. Canada is a very diverse scene, there's some bands I love (the Stills, New Pornos), and some I never got (Islands, newer Broken Social Scene)
American: Wilco, Spoon, Brendan Benson, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Ambulance LTD., Bright Eyes, the Decemberists, Elliott Smith (RIP), the National, Rilo Kiley, I could go on forever.
Psychedelic / other countries: This is a grabbag, but you can put most of the Elephant 6 bands in here (Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc.), as well as newer bands like MGMT. Australia has a sweet scene: check out The Veils and The Sleepy Jackson.
This is just a smattering of some of my favorite bands, if anyone here is in love with any of those or similar groups let me know! |

in absoulute stunned astonishment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just had to say it How can you put all european acts into one catagory??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I cant even put just the British groups into a single catagory, nevrr mind adding in europe as well!
BTW Libertines are long dead, the other bands formed by one of the lead singers [pete doherty] have been so bad i cant even remember their names!, they could never match "Cant stand me now" anyway! |

haha yes I'm sorry, I realized afterwards that my British section wasn't even close to complete but it was still longer than most of the others haha. I felt lazy
But yeah, there are obviously a lot more subdivisions in British rock that this point, I mean there is a huge difference between a band like Franz Ferdinand and British Sea Power and then the Long Blondes. All different sounds, different personalities, different styles. But for the sake of being a silly Yank, I grouped them for convenience.
Oh, and I keep putting the Libertines because I wish they still lived :/ Pete doherty is a huge asshole but they live on in my iTunes collection haha |

A lot of older bands would also be called indie, such as Ween, Yo La Tengo, and Pixies. |

British Indie > American Indie.
In my opinion at least.
And I love the Libertines... And Babyshambles and Dirty Pretty Things...
American indie, or what I have heard that has been classified as indie here... just sounds a lot of the same. It makes me sad for the future of music. |
