Today's news I couldn't help but notice, with a rather large rash of incidents where common sense prevails against the big content industry. I'm a believer in fair copyright, and not a believer in creating laws just to benefit an aging business model that refuses to evolve to consumer demands. Declaring war against consumers is not the answer. Focusing on the reason why P2P is so popular in the first place is a good start.

White House opposes expansion of taxpayer funded DOJ copyright cops.

Linking to P2P downloads declared LEGAL in Spain.

Bombing for peace is like you-know-what for virginity, right?

Good for them, if they do. This is a drastic step forward - nay, several. I'd gladly pay a nominal monthly fee to some one like the **AA if they adopt the P2P technology, probably even pay-per.

Nothing better than the speed, reliability, and community support of the P2P network. No service is more convenient - probably not even UPS.

Verry happy to see all of this. This is the way to conduct business, when you know you are beaten to a better idea, don't attack it, work with it.

Looks like good news for the overall P2P community,

and even moreso for IH's case against the CRIA.

It's a good thing that somebody in the government still has some sense. I was beginning to think we needed a massive revolution or something...

We do need a revolution, but it's clear here that It's already begun.

Very astute observation.

Some of these media companies have budgets bigger than a small nation. When you have a coalition of them you face a potentially irresistible force. The masses of p2p users represent an immovable object in opposition.

Kudos to any government, like Spain, that has the guts to make a strong stand on natural justice.

Honourable mention to the powers that be in the DoJ who refused to be the lapdog of big business and reminded their government of correct priorities in prosecuting crime and maintaining Truth, Justice and the American Way.

I wish that there was less ego battles and more informed exchange of ideas. Arguing on the internet is like, well, arguing on the internet!

It's like Roy Jones Jnr against Calzaghe. One punch after another. P2P is being brought under control by every small legislational increment. Slowly, a momentum seems to be building as the major 1st World nations fall into line with the RIAA and multi-national corporations. The weight of the law is brought to bear and the less powerful 1st World nations simply follow.

In Europe, radio was controlled by State and commercial interests until the mid-60s. Anything that was wasn't 'appropriate' or mainstream would never get airplay.

Then the pirate stations started and gained popularity. They broadcast from international waters and discrete locations. Radio Caroline and Atlanta kick started the underground of music in Britain and France.

After a while they were shut down and the DJs were integrated into mainstream radio on the mainland.

I think this is what is happening with P2P. It's gonna be brought under control. Major media corps will comandeer P2P to sell their product/content. ISPs will support the change and any independent ISPs will be priced out of the market by low commercial/advertising support. Music shops will almost vanish as commercial product is delivered P2P.

I'm not overly concerned because something new has always bubbled up. The big corps always make a profit but the technology always moves a little bit faster than they can. Big business is always the last guest at the party.

PS. Never saw a hat trick of random 2nd posters on one thread before now Laughing

What hat trick Wink
