I have started useing bitorrent today and got the hang of it pretty fast however i have some queries. I noticed that i have a "share rateing" (this is my first download) and have wondered if i could raise it manualy by obviosly shareing. I have noticed seeding and leaches, though i have a fair idea on what they are i am still not sure. I know that they basicly involve bits of memory that are taken from a source and can be added to. I would like to know how i can contibute by "seeding or leaching", if that is the correct terms and if this could help my download speed without playing with settings of bitorrent. It would also be great if anyone could help me by telling me ways to increase the speed of my downloads.

!! Thanks for any help !! Laughing

To increase your share ration, leave the torrent open after it reaches 100%, ideally until you have uploaded as much as you downloaded, which is a 1:1 ratio.
'Leeching' is when people download and don't share back.

Easy a seeder (or someone that is seeding) it someone that had 100% of the file and is sharing it to others.

A peer (or leecher) is someone that less than 100% of the and they ALSO share what they have with others.

Your download speed depends on a few things. How fast others are willing to give you the file (out of your control) your upload speed (out of your control until you have a LITTLE bit of the file that OTHERS want (then you become a peer) Once you start to upload more than 5KB/s then your DL speed with increase (part of the bit torrent program) and finally in the end.. sometimes torrents can slow down since you are getting the last of the file from the FEW seeders that have what you need. (out of your control).

That share rating is important. You recieved your file thanks to the kindness (lol or greed) of others. Everyone asks that you give to others at least what you get. 10MB DL should be 10MB ULed, or 1:1. Once you finish downloading your torrent, keep that torrent going to help OTHERS get the file you just got. At least until the share ratio is at 1.000 (or higher)

There are other settings to look at, like port forwarding, and adjusting the port on the bit torrent (since some ISP filter the default bit torrent port).

If you are downloading, you can adjust these when you are more comfortable. Just search forums for port forwarding. Its been asked (and answered) many times
