Rar, Zip, 7z are known as compressed or archived files, they need to be uncompressed or "opened" to obtain the file(s) that they contain inside. Various programs can be used to open them but we will use
Winrar
for the sake of this example. (it will open all archived file formats)
Download and install
Winrar
Before you open rar files of any sort they should be scanned with your anti virus software
If the file you want to open is a single file all you need to do is right click on it and you can either select -
Extract files (you will then be prompted to select a path to extract them to)
Extract here - the file will extract the contents, well here
Extract to (and it will say the same name as the archived folder)
Extract to is the best option as it will dump the whole contents of the archived file into a folder of the same name right next to it
If you have lots of smaller files named r001 r002 r003 etc the process is only slighty different -
Right click on the first file (r001 or the lowest number, also called a header file)
Again select extract to and all the files will extract in their correct order into a folder named the same as the archives
you can then move the whole folder to any location on your pc you like if you want |

Can someone explain to me why its necessary to split a file into 99 parts?
Whats the point? I feel I'm back on newsgroups. |

I'm not sure, but I think it might have something to do with the amount of bandwith used or something |

The reason for splitting up a file is so that people can download faster
Explanation: If you are just downloading an iso then you can only download from someone who has the iso but if it is in multiple files if they have one of the smaller files then you can download it although i am not sure of it's uses in non-peersharing torrents |

I have something to add to this, actually.
If you use the program 7zip instead of WinRAR, you will be able to unpack multi-RARed files if they have the extension of ".r01, .r02, .r03" and ".r001, .r002, .r003".
However, you will not be able to unpack files that have the extension ".001, .002, .003". Why is this of some concern? Because on some torrents, the uploader will multi-RAR their files in this format, and you will have to switch to WinRAR to be able to unpack. 7zip will unpack the first file (".001") but will encounter an error when moving to ".002".
I don't know if this has been fixed in a recent update of 7zip or not, but it's worth mentioning if it hasn't.

The point of splitting archives was (and still is to this day) to reduce traffic on FTP servers that host the files. If a user's client fails on a single ISO file, they'll be forced to re-download the whole file again (up to 3GB/7GB wasted bandwidth). However, if a user is downloading and their client fails on the 45th file out of 99, they merely have to redownload that one 100mb file and continue where they left off.
When ISOs are leaked to Bittorrent (because all Bittorrent really is is trickle-down from FTP and newsgroups), they are sometimes left in their original multi-splitted format to indicate that the uploader has not tampered with the files. |

I downloaded WinRAR and finished extracting the files for Sims-life stories. I went to the folder that it was put in and clicked the WinRAR book things and it opened WinRAR and showed me more files that needed to be extracted. Every time I click something it says it needs to be extracted. Is this supposed to happen and should I click all of the icons so it extracts everything? And what is the name or icon that is supposed to start the game? Thanks in advance for any help given. |
