orevergeek.com has a useful guide on speeding up firefox for broadband users. basically after getting to the hidden config settings you set the browser to request more data that it usually does.
1.Type “about:config into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining to “true
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining to “true
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to “0. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages MUCH faster now! |
New article with some more options: http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum21/8007.htm
| Original article wrote: |
To get started, type "about:config" in your FireFox address bar. The settings you're looking for are:
2.) network.http.pipelining.firstrequest => true
<snip> (rest of the tweaks already in first article) |
Talks about tweaking parameters to enable http pipelining, and optimizing for broadband. Enjoy!
If you are still using IE,
Firefox is a good free alternative.

np. Certainly much more responsive than IE with these tweaking.
ps. I use Opera, same parameters are in the preferences and page responsiveness is about the same. |

It is great, but I need to point out that some servers will reject you until you set that limit not to 30 but under 5. Isohunt goes nuts for anything over 10 after you have viewed about 4-5 pages from her.
Good find though! |

There's a little prog called
Firetune
that backs up your configuration settings and does the browser tweaking automatically. |
