Mhhh I was wondering why din't any of the sites which you can reach via this site got a same sort of e-mail, IF this 'investigator' did his job good he would have had url's and e-mail adresses to many more of the same sites, why din't he take action against those sites too? I really don't believe this is real, also because, as said before, this was send via e-mail and I believe microsoft would have mailed you via s-mail (snail-mail) to contact you about this sort of matter. But I can also see if from your point of view and take the search engine down for the time being...

Note that some things are back up, such as IRC search and torrent search (accept you can't download .torrent from here). So you can search and get torrents from other sites. Releases remain offline for now.

So MSFT has finally notced this site as my friend did.
True that we may be involved in piracy but we have never actually gave the people the true file. We have just hinted were to get them.
Almost every web site does this .
Go to WWW.XBOX-SCENE.COM
They tell you how to hack and find illegal files and guess what they never even got a letter.
This shows the MSFT just wants more dough because of the Europe issue that they fucked up on...

A torrent file simply has the name of a tracker, some file names and a few hashes. As far as I know, this does not count as hosting copyrighted material. Technically, the one breaking the law is the one seeding the torrent file. The seeder is the one who is hosting the actual data and is the one who allows the data to be sent to other people.

I think what we need to do is find real proof that microsoft was wrong and that isohunt.com has in no way violated any laws and provide this evidence to the ISP. Then hopefully they'll reconsider and let the whole site go back online.

One thought I do have though: Most of the people who pirate software probably weren't gonna buy it in the first place, so is microsoft even losing any profits?

How EASY people can get through your internet and hijack your browser, ect with that, i mean, do they expect us to buy all that software that gets rid of that stuff, no, but it still happens, there trying to cover there mistakes with this, dont worry M$, you still got more money then any1 else. (now i can see if they were loseing large amounts...) Shocked

So, it's illegal for you to host links to downloads?
Ok, imagine this

Someone comes up to you and asks you for directions to the bank. You give him directions, he goes there, and he robs it. Is it your fault he did something illegal?

Someone comes to your site and searches for a download. You give them a link to a file that is not on your server , and he downloads it. Is it your fault he did something illegal?

surely whoever sent ms threat to sue(and i presume is ligitimate and on ms behalf) knows that at best they are going to delay 'one' site from passing on where to get their stuff from, and at worst are going to have thier appeal over turned and so make any future lawsuits that much less likely to succeed as they will just see it was overturned once and auto quote that and not uphold a future claim? (seems a big waste of time to me,am surprised they even bothered.)

For myself, (and i am probably not in such a minority as i assume myself to be,) i download alot, mainly because 99.9% of what i download to play i get bored of 5 mins into it and then either delete or stuff to back of hard drive never to see light of day again untill i need to delete it to make more space...
True i do occasionaly find a game i play a few days or even more(rarely) and more often than not i tend to go out and buy that game because i know i like it enough to want the updates and addons available in the future without the incompatability hassles almost sure to get with copies...i do know for a fact though that i would never have bought even a 3rd of the games i have bought if i hadnt had a copy of them 1st to try.(yes i 'know' u can usualy get demo's,but who wants to try 75% of the game effects only to buy the full game and find the 100% effects etc are not compatable with your sound card or slow the game so much it makes it boring-heh)
so far as i am concerned if by some miracle such lawsuits became viable and all torrent sites etc closed down,ms and others would lose money in sales to me if no one else Shocked
....................

Incidently, when its so easy to joe average to find full games etc online, why do MS assume they are likley to lose alot of income from sales lost?i mean do they REALY think people are stupid enough to PAY someone for a copy of their stuff when they can probably just as easily get a copy of their own off net instead?(56k days are over good as,so chances of people 'paying' a cable owner etc to get a copy off net for them is way past its zenith...)

When I checked that website in the e-mail address it forwarded me to http://www.microsoft.com/piracy The site states that Product Activation is to protect you and gives ways of reporting piracy. It really seems like a joke because no one that would visit this site would report anything. They just want to look like a caring company. But, what they're doing is horrible. Once again that link is http://www.microsoft.com/piracy

Actually I'm pretty sure that because you have the links to the sites listed in your database that you are responsible for the contents that you hold: It's your site. However if you were to place in action a nottice that says "You are only allowed to download these files if you have purchased the original copy. These files are for backups only, and the providers of teh files have purchased these files as well."

Then make your index a nottice putting in place hte internet privacy act of 1995 stating that if you work for microsoft, are affiliated with, or work for the governemnt, then you are not allowed to view this page or any of it's contents.

What your doing is legal as long as you make sure that the people who are downloading these files own the files in the first place (which noone can be assured of).

This is actually a myth, and does not work. You can read more here http://www.snopes.com/legal/privacy.htm
