I hate to belabor the point, but I don’t think you understand how this discussion has evolved. What I am saying is that double quotes in a search string didn’t work as expected based on me experiences at other sites and from what I read on your site. Again, if you didn’t understand that, I’m sorry. I also understand that sometimes capability has to be reduced in order to fit available resources and that the design compromises made are not always to our complete liking.

By why am I responding one more time? There seems to be an assertion that by attempting to do a search on the exact phrase “The Batman”, that somehow this was insufficient or wrong. Well, I can do such a search on Torrentz and Spytorrent, and get the results I expect. The problem is: I can’t make an rss feeds out of searches at those sites. (Suggestions have been posted!) There it is again, limited resources, reduced capability and not completely satisfactory compromises. Throwing more “non-stop” words at the search doesn’t necessarily help either. Believe me; in isoHunt searches with issues, I’ve looked for the magic bullet, the word or words in common in the results I want. Unfortunately, the magic bullet doesn’t always exist. In the case of “The Batman”, the only reasonable commonality I found was the exact phrase “The Batman”. From my initial naivety and from what I read about advanced searches at your site, I think you can understand why I tried the search and why I thought it might be a bug when it didn’t work the way I expected, and why I was a bit mystified by the suggestion that I hadn’t added enough “notstop” words when, for my specific example, adding additional nonstop words doesn’t help.

In my enlightened state I know I was asking more of the isoHunt search than it can currently deliver. Paraphrasing a previous post, “I’ll deal with it.” In the meantime, I look forward to new isoHunt search features as they become available.

Well i know this is kinda off topic about your discussion, but i just wanna say that even though Isohunt takes longer to load, my downlaods still kinda mess up, where it says some errors... but when i find a good server, with good seeds, than my download is 500% faster, im on a wireless laptop and i was hittin maybe 10K/bS and thats because of the lag in my server, but now im hittin about 200K/bS... THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND KEEP UP ALL THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

arrey, please ignore the post by Dj Dizzie, as it's not very informed. The best thing i could possibly offer you would be for you to find a free shell someplace where you can curl (make sure you set the user-agent to something like mozilla firefox) the current rss feed and then grep for what you want from it.

basically, if you want an rss feed that you can dump into azureus (so you can be lazier) well, maybe our particular search isn't the search for you. If you're an enterprising (read: not lazy) individual, and you've got your heart set on getting things just the way you want them, perhaps you could find a way of filtering our rss feeds to present only the information you want! Shocked

what i find kinda funny is that you'd visit our site which is provided to you for free and go off half cocked when we'd PLAINLY stated that our search system was being overhauled, again posting to a thread that PLAINLY STATED that we'd just worked out some MAJOR bugs (read, bugs that actually affected our users in a way that prevented them from visiting the site) and you come 'round whining about how the search here doesn't react to you in the way you'd like.

which... in my view, would be about the same thing as whining because some woman from around your way slapped you in the face for you oggling her breasts rather than rubbing your face in them (which isn't her responsibility in the first place).

the idea is simple, man... we've all 3 put in a heroic amount of work on this new search backend and for you to come here and piss on our work because it's not up to YOUR standards is f**kin ludicrous. believe it or not, we don't owe you as an individual a damned thing. we owe the community for their continued support. if you can't find something here that you want to find, go someplace else, but don't for a MOMENT think that you have the right to come here and bitch, moan and complain about a service that we work so hard on that you don't pay for!

So as I understand it, of the three, you are what's know in the trade as the flamer, the person who takes a thread from factual to opinionated, from the rational to the irrational. Once again, let me state how I feel about isoHunt and if you wish, you can dispute that somehow these aren’t my true feelings.

1. I like isoHunt. When I first starting downloading torrents, it became apparent that I needed a more focused search for torrents than Copernic Agent and Google could provide; that’s how I found Torrentz, slick interface, no ads and lots of torrent links. The problem was, I wasn’t getting search hits for torrents that I thought surely mush exist. That’s how I found isoHunt. Usually, isoHunt finds what Torrentz doesn’t, and while I was just doing ad-hoc interactive searches, isoHunt and Torrentz were enough. Later on I got into downloading material from shows or series where new torrents are regularly added. I’ve been using iPodderX as a podcast aggregator and my goal was and is to subscribe to feeds that automatically notify me when new torrents are available. That’s how I found Torrentspy. I tried perhaps a dozen sites that specialize in TV torrents; TorrentSpy’s directory based rss feeds are the best I’ve found to date. But sometimes I can’t find a direct feed for the show I want, and that’s when I use isoHunt’s search rss feed. As I’ve said, it’s a great feature. So when it comes to finding torrents in general, I recommend Torrentz, isoHunt, and Torrentspy, indeed, I use all three. When it comes to rss feeds, my first choice is Torrentspy, then isoHunt.
2. I fully appreciate the spirit of volunteerism and hard work, with my background; I appreciate it more than you might think. It’s amazing how much everyone depends on volunteers for so much in everyday life, and while isoHunt can’t really be considered critical, it’s definitely one of the “icings on the cake”. That’s why I praise the work you and all the other volunteers do at isoHunt and why I’ll always try to keep the discussion on a factual and courteous level. To be honest, if you feel the need to inject expletives into the discourse, not only do you loose creditability, in all likelihood, you make a reasonable consensus impossible.
3. If I was to summarize this thread; this is how I would do so:

- isoHunt is an excellent search site and one of three that I recommend for general torrent searches
- Torrentspy directory rss feeds are the best if you can find what you want, otherwise, the isoHunt search rss feed is an excellent alternative. The isoHunt search feed results aren’t always what I expect, but I’ve been told by the isoHunt staff that this is due in part to resource constraints and that isoHunt is continuously working to improve all aspects of its site including searches. I like that!
- In this thread, I had one suggestion for improvement: that the advance search documentation be updated. Not only was my suggestion reviewed, it was implemented! Thanks for the work and need I say it, I really like that!

In conclusion, if this be “whining,” let there be more of it!

you want to be flamebait? be prepared to be flamed. if you cannot understand that expletives are used as emphasis, you're too daft to be using a computer Wink cheers.

I’m going on vacation the next two weeks, but all the preparations are in place, so I’ve some extra time. However, as a service to other isoHunt users, a warning is issued that this thread may take a decidedly dark turn, where opinion is substitute for fact, where strong language is considered a replacement for any resemblance to a valid position, where reality is an unwelcome companion, and where the participants only true goal is to self inflict wounds to whatever creditability they cling to. Such behavior might not get you into heaven, but there is a perverse sense of earthly enjoyment. Truly, for those that read on, “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!” Twisted Evil

You know alot of news sites and such would have linked to this site to spread the word of the up coming mpaa lawsuit, but......

The ads here are considered porn and that's the reason why it wont be linked, maybe make an alternate page that's porn free to promote the word? Then I bet you will get floods of linkages going on, and how do I know this? First hand, I asked different administrators to spread the word and link this site but they wouldnt cause people who are at work and news sites dont usually like visiting sites that contain any sort of porn. I think I've said porn about a million times here. Something to think about.

Thanks for the note. We don't allow porn ads on our site. I found one and it's been disabled, though I'm not sure if there are others and what I disabled is the ads u were referring to. If you see another porn ad, please take a screenshot and copy and link the ad links to, and I'll track it down. You can email it to gary a t isohunt.com. Thanks

I think he is talking about the MATE1 banners. Definately board on NFSW, and does offend some (personally, I enjoy the eyecandy)

right, so, i don't know if everyone's on holiday or what, but i'm having some problems with the search engine and need some help. i asked on irc, but everyone seems to be idle. so then i made a post here in the lounge area. it's been about three days and it's only been viewed 10 times (8 if you don't count me) and no one's even replied. hopefully asking here will be more likely to get someone's attention.. thanks.

Hey everyone, how's it going. I am having a hard time converting my old (pre-update) search strings to work with the new system, and am hoping someone can help me. Since it's for an RSS feed, it has to be done in one search, and that's where the problem starts.

My old search string was " +grey* +anatomy +(eztv|vtv) ".
This gave me only results which contained "greys/grey's/etc", "anatomy", and either "eztv" or "vtv". This is exactly what I am looking for.

With the new search, I can't figure out how to get this. The + operator is now assumed, so we can remove that. But searching for " grey* anatomy (eztv|vtv) " returns 0 results, so it obviously doesn't work quite the same. Looking for grey* anatomy on its own, we get 174 results, which is fine.
grey* anatomy eztv returns 18 results.
grey* anatomy vtv returns 19 results.
These two seem about right, as before the upgrade there were always around 30-40 results.

So, how do I merge those two searches together to get the 37 results i want? I can't figure it out.
grey* anatomy eztv |vtv returns 0 results.
grey* anatomy |eztv |vtv returns 174 results.
grey* anatomy (|eztv |vtv) returns 174 results.
grey* anatomy +(|eztv |vtv) returns 18 results.
grey* anatomy (eztv vtv) returns 0 results.

(eztv|vtv) is wrong syntax. It should be either (eztv || vtv) or (eztv OR vtv). Note OR has to be capitalized.

grey* anatomy (eztv OR vtv) gives 19 + 18 = 37 results, which is correct. Note that there was a bug with OR used in this context with (), which has been fixed.
