I understand the concept of patriotism, I used to care about this country, but the last few (and probably the new) governments, have basically ruined it for me. I can't relax knowing that there are people getting imprisoned for standing up for their ideals and patriotism, and then are branded criminals or terrorists and those that actually spew hatred (often in public) are given a free meal ticket and house, and even a car in some case! What do we get? 2+ hours in a queue to fight for the money we're entitled to!!! What's so bloody patriotic about that? Are we to be proud of that? I'd be proud if the government actually apologised and did something worthwhile other than screw over their native countrymen and brother and sisters. Sorry RAV3R, but there's very little to be proud of at the moment mate

To be patriotic does not at all mean stay in your country, i would know i have moved countries twice and still love my own, but duty calls and you do the best you can for yourself following the best opportunities from place to place.

patriotism is the opposite of zionism. zionism is living in all countries of the world but caring only for Israel. Patriotism is caring for both the country you reside in and the country of your and your parents' birth.

with a large and diverse country though born and raised in one state - i still love it but don't want to live there - currently living in another state - enjoyable but still have fond memories of another island(s) state

either way makes no difference for how i feel about the whole of US,
and yet i also feel fondly for where my parent, parents, parents... came from (not US) - somewhere back in the genealogy

patriotism has its strong points - but we should not put down other places
after all aren't we all sheep/cabbages/human/living?

i voted more yes than no.... this is because i am patriotic and do love my country (ENGLAND) but there are a lot of people that are ruining things here and making life hard i.e the gov wasting our money and coming up with more political correctness rules by the day... i'm not racist is the slightest and was born in london where you can find every nationalty in it....but i do think we need to shut the doors and deport illegal imigrants so that we can rebuild our culture and economy again as we are just seen as a soft touch and they can have what they want and just laugh at us for it,... and i do mean the dossers who claim on us working people too... i understand giving to the needy but those spongers need to sort it out... the morals knowledge and goodness of us english women and men are being lost by chavvy little fuckers who just wanna be thick and lazy gangster wannabee's it piss's me off... so like i said more like then not but there are reasons

I was born in Chile and raised in Australia since the age of 3. So what country do i say im from? Chile, but am Australian. One country gave me life and the other kept me alive, I have loyalties to both. Talking to a friend some years back, i was made aware of something that made things clearer for me, he asked me "What language do you think in?" That was obvious English!, so i consider myself more Australian that Chilean. But i found that i had problems watching either country during times of crisis/ natural disaster, Australia during the QLD floods and Chile when the massive earthquake hit, And in both countries when miners were stuck under ground. So i choose both.

I'm not patriotic whatsoever.
I had no choice in where my parents conceived me, nor did I have an important impact on my country's history or how it got where it is today.
I take pride in things I can achieve. Not things that just happen to be so.

I know I know..... an old topic but it has been withstanding the test of time.
Its a multipage thread and for the hell of it i read through it all yet again.
As Random poll bot brought it to my attention I thought I would add a couple of minor little points that I think are relevent.

I am English but was never proud of England until I left.
I lived long enough in Holland to have a dual nationality and as I was older I came to appreciate Holland and become defensive of both England and Holland when ever in Discussion.

I now live in China and realise my defensive attitude now also applies to this my final destination. So am I patriotic. I think the word black on white means one thing but its implication means something else.
Best example is, IsoHunt is not a land but I am fiercely defensive and Patriotic in the sense that I defend IH in my arguments and discussions with people from the outside.

I am now at a point in life where i can appreciate what England and being English might mean, however those thoughts apply also to Holland and are
now being applied to my attitude of China.

Another aspect that needs consideration is the webz..... we are now so well connected globally that in many respects it is no longer a case of outsiders but more an aspect of belonging to groups.
Whilst I hate FaceBook it is quite obvious that many people feel at home and often it is nothing geographical but more a sense of belonging.

Even here in this forum I can communicate with people from around the globe. Many are so different but the ability to cross borders and interact has shown that being Patriotic whilst not a bad thing is often a relic from the past and the need to be defensive of influences from the outside.
In this sense true Patriotism will only be reborn when people unite under a common cause. I believe the common cause to be our planet as countries become ever more insignificant.

I also think that this present era of mayhem and ever increasing security and new forms of law is in fact a result of globalization. As people become ever more connected and the identity of groups become more substantial the need for security is springing up in the minds of many governments.
There is a fear I believe where the webz have given power back to people and the need for borders real or imaginary are being implemented to stop the ebb and flow of ideas and realization that we are in fact more the same than different.

Now most of what I say can of course be pulled apart and debated but one thing I know for sure......

If them little green men with zap guns from Andromeda came to besiege our planet then our world's communities would unite under a singular partiotic cause. "Us or Them"
