If there was a logical reason to think the world would end 2012 we should do everything in our power to stop that, however this is not the case. Wink

I said no, but for what it's worth, I've heard two things that are wierdly coincidental...

1. I learned in Astronomy class a couple years ago that the Earth's axis does this flip-flop thing every 26,000 years. I forget what it's called, maybe precession or something and that it's due to do that in 2012.

2. The Maya created this super-accurate calendar way way back that could be used to show the positions of stars and everything and it ends on December 21, 2012. Coincidentally, I think this is the date of the Winter solstice, and all the History Channel stuff I've seen on it says that the Mayans viewed this as the end of the world as we know it.

Is it a wierd coincidence that a flip-flopping of the Earth's axis should occur during the same year in which an ancient civilization with oddly advanced astronomy skillz is no longer able to predetermine the positions of the stars? I say yes to that, because - ok - when precession occurs, the stars will shift radically in our sky. However, this doesn't lend concrete proof to the idea that the world will actually come to an end, along with human civilization. Big things could occur, good or bad, but I'd like to think we could pull through just about anything. In desperate times, life itself seems to find a way.

Of course it's not going to "all end" in 2012. They've have plenty of other conspiracy dates on when the world was going to go on and BOOM. BUT, nothing follows through. 06/06/06 would've been a much better setting for it all to end upon. What's so special about 2012? Can't see anything special.

UNLESS! Shocked 12/12/12 IT'S DOUBLE 666. DOUBLE EVIL!!!!!!!

Nearly right, mate. As the earth moves thru' space, it is subject not just to variations in the length and shape of it's orbit (going from elliptical to nearly circular and back again) but also to rhythmic shifts in it's angle of orientation to the sun, it's tilt and pitch and wobble, all affecting the duration and intensity of sunlight falling on any patch of land. In particular it is subject to three changes in position, known formally as it's obliquity, precession and eccentricity, over long periods of time. The cycles are of differing lengths of time. appox. twenty, forty and one hundred thousand years respectively. There is another phenomenon that occurs it seems every few hundred thousand years which entails the magnetic poles flipping over. Unlike the other wobbles that take thousands of years to change the flipping of the magnetic poles can happen abruptly. But apart from some electronics short circuiting and maybe a hell of a borealis display i dont think man or life or indeed the earth will suffer as this flipping has occurred many many times in the past and well.......we're here discussing this, arent we? And your.....

.......last sentence confirms this. Life kinda keeps on going.

To be totally honest the most likely thing to happen in 2012 , is a serious terrorist attack on London during the Olympic games , other than a severe war breaking out like WWIII , then i think were safe .

I hope not. At least, it's further eroding my faith in humanity as well. A feat I hadn't thought possible at this point.

Anyway, assuming the world ends in 2012, how many inflatable sheep will you have used up by then? It out to be a poll question, I know, but what can I do.. Pray to Mod perhaps? Nah, f**k it. The ways of Mod are too damn mysterious for me.

Personally, I won't have used up any. Pseudo-bestiality is one thing, but pseudo-animal cruelty? I think not. Nay, I'll have a heard on a patch of fake grass in the bedroom, Barry White playing softly in the background.

I've read and watched a ton of stuff about the Mayans, but they don't have me convinced. Sure, their calendar was more accurate than ours, but they killed people just to make sure the sun kept shining! Who's going to believe in them whole-heartedly? Nostradamus is, as someone mentioned, quite vague. Saint Malachy would have us believe that the current Pope is the last (or second to the last) we will see, which makes some folks believe our lives will soon be over. Webbots, a predicting program based on reading mankind’s subconscious via the internet, has predicted things from now till 2012 that have the creators of the program buying boats, stock piling food, and hoping for the best. Some ancient oracles also predicted that our time would be the end of the world, but most of them were high on hallucinogenic substances. Edgar Cayce, whose approximately 14,000 “readings” are still highly valued today, since he was accurate down to tiny details in over 11,900 of those readings, said that the Great Lakes would one day run straight down to the Gulf of Mexico, cutting the USA in two. Basically, he said the changes would be world wide, but he didn’t say exactly when this would occur. He did say, however, that we would know by an acceleration of earth changes (which are happening now).

With all of these prophecies, I have to admit, it peaked my curiosity and I wanted to see what the scientists had to say. Wow, so sorry I did that. Tectonic plates and polar shifts… it got ugly fast. Apparently Alaska used to be where the equator was. The Earth tends to flip every once in a while. It’s already starting scientist say. Unfortunately, no one seems to know exactly when it will happen or how fast it will happen when it does - could be 3 minutes or 3000 years. According to experts, if it is a fast shift, it will generate waves 26 miles high and wipe out life on our planet. In describing this phenomena scientist compare the earth to an orange. The layer of earth we are living on is like a loosened orange peel. It can slide independently of the core. In a quick shift Earth’s oceans would splash up over all the land everywhere. Mountains would get thrown on top of each other. Only a few sea creatures might survive and anyone in the space shuttles/stations.

To make matters more confusing, on December 21, 2012 there is an event that only happens once every 25,000 years or so. The earth will align with the sun and the Milky Way. No one knows exactly what effect this will have on our planet, which is already getting ready to shift. Some are speculating that the alignment might be just enough to make the earth shift on that day.

Yeah, so I don’t know what to believe. So “Live like you were dying…” – Tim McGraw
