Haywire. Okay, remembering my scale of waste of an hour and a half or good entertainment for that invest hour and a half...Haywire was a waste. Couple of big names in it, thought it might be good, but I was wrong. Without spoiling anything, I just lay the blame on the lead actress Gina Carano. Completely not convincing in the role, completely not the right person for the job in this case.

Also watched Sherlock Holmes, Game of Shadows, great flick - enjoyed it a lot, so for sure, this one was not a waste of an hour and a half.

The King of Fighters (2010)

You can't expect this to be really closely based on the popular SNK fighter as we all know how these type of films fare and this is no different frankly.

With a small selection of characters from the game and an overly convoluted plot this film feels way too bogged down with mindless dialog and not much fighting. Game franchises like this tend to have rather silly overblown stories behind their characters which tend not to make much sense or have any proper continuity, I give you 'Street Fighter'. This film is a let down as the creators have tried to encompass as much back story as possible but all that ends up doing is boring and confusing you with endless Japanese sounding names, places and objects which mean nothing unless you are a fanboy.

The fighting is pretty limp really and that's the killer blow, Ray Park growls and snarls his way through the film as the main bad guy and to be honest he looks the part..but that's it. The rest of the cast are nobodies accept for the overrated Maggie Q and there isn't really anything of interest to comment on.

Unoriginal fights, dull costumes, uninspired effects (what little there was) and some bad looking sets all make this a poor waste of your time. Its not horrific as was 'Street Fighter', much better than 'Double Dragon' (not hard) but nowhere near as fun as 'MK' and even 'Tekken' had some reasonably fun fights with the pretty boy cheese meister Luke Goss. Main problem here is they tried to make it way too seriously and it just doesn't work basically.

I watched the slightly surreal and slightly sexy Sucker Punch, it was pretty good but it kinda played out like nights worth of drugged up spaced out thinking

Fair play for bringing to our screens though

Sucker punch is indeed a trip,,,,,,,
critics were split down the middle with either hate it or love it........me ???
I is obviously a little weird and I loved it.
Anyways onto the last movie i watched...........
Preacher with a shotgun.........don't give a rats arse what the professional critics say...great movie. A movie that after leaving you flabbergasted ends with real footage during the closing titles of the real preacher......
I read somewhere that he was a trigger happy SOB.....me? I do not care as without doubt he has done more good than harm.
As he said himself, if your child is kidnapped and I can get him back do you really care how i do it. KUDOS to the man: he gets my vote any day.

Last movie i watched was X-Men First Class

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1270798/

And was surprised at just how good it was. Really good acting and a real prequel that added to the story rather than took away from it like most do
9/10 from me

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

Not a bad film, and it had its moments. Kurt Angle makes an appearance or two and his acting is better than most pro wrestlers. The story was okay for a supernatural movie. I think it was the sidekick Marcus that really annoyed me the most. Don't know who's more annoying Sam Huntington [Marcus] or Shia LeBeouf [who isn't in this film [Thank God!]].

I'd give it 6/10.

Movie holics April, week 16 &17:

1. Hit list (2011), Life hits you hard and you get pissed. Do not go to the bar and start talking with a stranger about your life. You might end to make a list, hit list, of people you want to die. You go home and find next day that persons in the list you made start dying. So you realise that you had just met a depressed professional killer, who now wants to do you a favour. And then you, as any good person, want to stop this killer. Maybe you guessed it already, this is a story of this movie. A little bit boring, points 4/10.

2. Haywire (2011), this movie was a positive surprise, did not expect a lot. Action movie that challenges tomb raider movies with a real action heroess, pretty lady with whom you do not want to start a fight. Action pieces not only look real but also they sound like real. I almost shared the pain when the girl jumped from the roof to the ground. This movie is worth of 7½/10.

3. Blood out (2011), there is absolutely no useless scenes in this little pearl of action film. A cop tries to join in a gang which killed his little brother in order to have a revenge. Simple story with tough guys and their crazy lady domina and slave bitches, all this in 1hour 25 minutes. My points 7½/10.

4. Jack and Jill (2011), If you like Adam Sandler, this movie is for you. If not, well it is double torture, since Adam plays the both roles, Jack and Jill…

5. Warrior (2011), IMDb gave 8,2 points, which is good. Excellent boxing (or is this free boxing?) movie, brothers fighting against each other in the finals, from me 9/10 points.

6. Seven below, 2012 , iiiiik, I just hate watching spooky movies with someone sneeking behind you with a knife. I hate mirror scenes or scenes when someone is watching under the bed… it is sooo obvious what happens.. and I can not watch these without putting hands to cover my eyes. So a lot of obvius spooky moments waiting for you. Extra plus for not having a scary clown with sharp teeth in this movie.

7. Age of heroes, 2011. Second world war/one episode from Norway. Sean Bean in it, so it is a guarantee for a good small film. Points 7/10.

8. Like crazy (2011). Kind of students´ love story. Only one comment: boring.

9. Underworld, awakening, (2011). Vampires, warewolves and again, a new hybrid playing the game of thrones… Not bad if you like this kind of movies.. and me like.. and definitely there will be a follow up, part 4.

10. Pariah, (2011), 17 year old girl looking for her sexual identity, and as result she loves girls. For your information, this is a drama, not a lesbian porn movie. Movie gets points 8/10.

Now resting a week...

Fearless (2006)

Exquisitely lavish is a good way to describe this Jet Li film, I thought this was some kind of silly action flick or another historical ancient Chinese dynasty film with more semi bald Chinese blokes mixed with a fantasy element, but boy was I wrong. Turns out this is actually a biopic of a famous martial artist by the name of Huo Yuanjia as we follow his life of training in the art of Wushu.

I was slightly dubious as I started to watch this as many Eastern martial arts films tend to be very over the top with their fight sequences and use too much mystical hocus pocus over realism. To my joy this film is very down to earth and a very solid steady epic which clearly has had allot of time and effort put into it.
The first thing that hits you is the attention to detail on everything, the sets and costumes look beautiful down to the last tiny prop, all the cast look authentic for the era and the acting is most definitely top dollar. The story is slowish but never dull as you are slowly fed much Eastern wisdom and philosophy that really is a joy to hear. Li's soft calm voice is perfect with this in his role as he portrays the arrogant fighter in his prime, a man coming to terms with the beauty of life, kindness and honour and finally a wise compassionate mentor...but never at any point is Li an unlikeable person.

As for the fighting...the real crux of the matter for many, its pretty darn fine basically, what you have here is some stunning fast fluid and realistic fights displaying Wushu in its finest form from Li. I was so pleased not to see lots of obvious wire work or cgi nonsense to interfere, that's not to say there is just a small amount of wire work to add a small element of magic but it just about works without ruining your suspension of disbelief.
There is a strong 'MMA' undercurrent in this film also of course, the whole point was how Yuanjia challenged foreign fighters from all over the world and different disciplines to demonstrate and prove Wushu. This entails fights against boxers, lancers, kickboxers, fencers etc... and is possibly the first example of 'MMA', I have no clue whether it was or not but it certainly seems so which is interesting.

I have to give much kudos to this film and its direction from Yu, I was pretty surprised this came from Yu seeing as his previous films don't come close to this type of epic offering. I also must admit to not being a Jet Li fan and find many of his films too similar plus he really looks quite mean facially if you ask me hehe got evil eyes, never the less this film is damn high quality with superb work in every area making it a visual treat with stoic performances.

tis indeed an excellent film.....the descendants of Yuanjia actually sued the movie maker as some parts of the film were embellished to a point of hollywood style who cares. However Yuanjia is a true and honoured master here in China. The film was a success here but it was also widely discussed with blogs giving a truer insight into the real facts.
The poison and who did it are still contested but it is an accepted fact that he was murdered.
He also removed the stigma of the sick man of the east which was a common phrase used to describe the chinese as they were pushed deeper into oblivion at the time by those wanting the resources and of course the lucrative business of the opium trade.
Yuanjia did in fact best many of the western fighters and to the dismay of govrning foreign officials was actually admired by many of those he defeated who came back to Yuanjia for guidance and insight into his abilitites.

Kind of a sad parallel that bruce lee also had a similar phase in his life and also was both despised by some and honoured by others for his ability and teachings.

Hubbs.....for a movie man glad you caught up with this one.....another movie by li that has some interesting fight scenes and one slo mo scene that in my mind is the ultimate fight with the sounds of water drops is the movie "Hero"
Watch it with full sound minimum 5 channel and have the volume loud for the 1st fight scene with the lance. It is a scene that none have ever improved upon.

Admiral (2008)
Russian movie about admiral Kolchak. Never heard of him? that's because he was largely written out of 20th century history by the communists, he's the guy who led the white Russians during the revolution. How times have changed when the bolshevic's are now painted as the villains and the old imperialist is a hero. Anyway, the movie is not about naval warfare it only starts that way, some good CGI and action sequences then moves through the revolution, it's a straightforward story, big budget and looks the part, worth a look if you like historical movies.

We are the night (2010)
German movie with a different take on the vampire theme with a female trio in Berlin. I'm not actually a fan of the genre but this is very stylish and slick and plays like a fast moving thriller, storyline is also above average. Worth a look even for non-genre fans. There is a dubbed English version of this that should be avoided like the plague.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1692504/

Bullhead (2011)
Belgian movie loosely about the animal hormone mafia (really) although the main storyline is how the central character got to be how he is which is far from normal. First 30 mins I had no idea where this was going, the pieces only start to fall into place much later. Reviews are much more enthusiastic about this than I was, it's not for everyone that's for sure.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1821593

The Hunter (2011)
I think most people have seen this already, hunter goes in search of the Tasmanian tiger and a not so warm welcome down under. Slow methodical thriller, great scenery, Dafoe is always good value and he looks the part in this, quite a lot of sequences with no dialogue which fits the slightly haunting style, I enjoyed it.

The Darkest Hour (2011)

Image

Pretty good and original post apocalyptic flick with ruined landscapes. The concepts used are very cool and made sense. The cgi isn't that bad as most are whining about. Much better than John carter in every way. I don't know why i even I compared this with that movie just now. It's not stretched like other crap movies and it's very well paced with intense scenes. Can't understand why it got 4.9 on "imdb" whereas crap movies are getting 7+ points (Can't trust that site these days..). I didn't watch it up until now because of the imdb ratings. Glad someone (from here) recommended it and I really enjoyed it. Nice cast and well performed by everyone. This movie didn't suck at any angle. Highly recommended popcorn flick wont disappoint you at all. Well worth your 80 minutes (without credits..)

7.5/10
