nah, i just have a knack for retaining useless information
also years ago i visited some colleges that had some of those machines
i've always had a warm place in my heart for science and healthcare |

Your saying that on the fact that global warming is an happening thing and man is responsible for it, while I agree it may be hotter, I don't think man has anything what so ever to do with it.

Magnetic experiments eh? Hope you dont mean like in Tom and Jerry cartoons when Tom swallows a magnet an' Jerry makes him zoom about banging into shit and shit!!
j/k mate. What kind of experiments? |

if so - cool stuff |
No actually, I work with animals that detect the earth's magnetic field and orient themselves to it. In my experiments we are basically switching (reversing) the magnetic field to see how the animal responds (we built a magnetic coil). We're also taking recording from the animal's brain (single cell) to learn more about how the animal responds to different magnetic orientations. |

i agree with what you say, partially because we have no control over how hot the sun gets, and where it gets hot on the planet, or where it heats i should say. But what i also agree with, is that man is to blame for weakening the ozone layer because of bad stuff in the air, and bad stuff comes from man made objects. There for making the ozone layer weak, therefore letting the sun penetrate the ozone layer in certain spots, there for causing global warming. |

i never would have guessed that, i didn't even know these animals existed,
what kinda animals detect earths magnetic fields? |

Lot's of birds do, migratery birds. Aint there a swallow that flys from northern Europe to sub-saharan Africa every year that uses the Earths magnetic fields to navigate? |

Which country, honestly is going to tell businesses to cut polluting, when a company can pack up the jobs and get a nice new factory in places such as China for low cost. It would be a brave President/Prime minister/dictator who will want to face the people after more job losses.
Its obviously much easier to tell people they are working on the climate issue (without ever doing much about it), than the leaders losing their own job later.
Its so much easier for them to let the population die from lack of water, food than to actually face reality for themselves. We can see whats happening already, but are you prepared to lose your house/job to help the earth out?
Individuals are smart, humanity sadly lacks good sense. Hell we cant even stop nations from trying to destroy each other as it is.
And this is my most optimistic hope for the world, you should hear me when I feel down! |

Stole the words from my mouth. Also, a interesting tidbit of information on this train of thought is that the Earth's magnetic field actually
sounds
like tropical birds singing. |

No again, they're special sea slugs, how they behave is what we call is magneto-lunar orientation. Depending on the phases of the moon, they'll orient to a different direction. These slugs are essentially blind and use magnetic field as a compass. How do they know what phase the moon is? We don't know but we believe it's intrinsic since they have to compensate for tidal levels which are effected by the moon.
BTW almost all migratory birds have built in compass and sea turtles (most marine animals) also are able to detest magnetic field. Animals like the shark can sense the magnetic field as they swim through the ocean, which conducts a current due to the magnetic field.
And Most insects use sun compass and migrating insects like Monarch Butterfly have magnetic sense as well. Most insects can see UV light and polarized light, and thus know where the sun is and basically what time of the day it is, thus a circadian clock linked to sun compass use. |

i totally forgot about this thread that i made and wow i'm so impressed with the replies!
i love all the theories and i haven't read them all but the ones that i have read really expanded my horizon of knowledge lol.
the stuff about magnetic fields was mind boggling lol. |

If you get to work with such interesting things....why give it up to become a doctor? It just occurred to me ..... doesn't research pay well? |

Well, if it's anything to do with climate change then yes, research can pay very well. |

Na not really, especially if you are funded by the government. It will take atleast 6 more years to a get a Phd and not get paid more than $80K a year. Might as well become a doctor get paid three times as much and still be able to do research. Besides I don't really like research, people who do it are really passionate about their experiments and overlook money. |

Ah if you do not enjoy it that is a different matter. That explains it. I certainly hope you enjoy being a doctor more! The money should help |
