ok...i have been an avid supporter of xp since the first.i have used vista on my toshiba lappy and i actually liked it.the toshiba is neither here nor there.i have heard from a few reliable sources that come the first quarter of '09 xp is gonna be non-existance.theres gonna be no drivers supported for it(new),and its going off the shelf.i dont mind upping to vista or even 7(which i have pre beta)but i mean damn...i believe that xp is one of the best operating systems out there that has every been out there.plus i just really dont want to change.
if there is someone out there that has a bonahid link that says ya or nay about the future of xp please post it.thanks

I voted XP32 which is the os I have been using for over 2 years now. Before that I was on windows 98!
I've been on a few friends pc's who are running vista, but it's different. I find doing simple jobs take sometimes twice as long as they do on xp, only because I'm familiar with xp and I'm not familiar with vista. that's basically what it comes down to.
I'm more than happy with xp32 (although I've never tried 64) and am not in a rush to change to vista.

XP is old and outdated. The only reason people are resisting Vista is because of XP's modest system requirements.

I changed to Vista64 and I now find that XP doesn't run very smoothly.

from previous experience i tend not to use anything Microsoft within its first or sometimes even 2nd year of release...

Vista yes is very processor intensive so i wont be considering that till i at least get 4 gigs of RAM, but, i dont know im still so comfortable with XP...

If you had to fault Vista what would they be for those that have used it?

or the plus side of it compared to XP???

I'm using 2GB of higher end RAM with a dual core processor, and my RAM idles at about 800MB-950MB usage (althought windows is using 100MB+ of that as cache) and my processor on idle never goes about above 2-4% on each core.

Vista Ultimate 6.0.6001
Athlon X2 4850e
2GB Patriot Viper RAM DDR2 1066 (running at 800)

so is there nothing you dislike about vista?

you see you got me thinking about change now specially since i just got a new Raptor 10,000 rpm sata HDD that i need to build from scratch (was gona mirror it back to the original xp which it is now but i would lose a few gigs as i have 36gb currently and the new one they sent me under warranty is 76gb so it feels a shame to do that...)

anyways i have 2 gigs of Ram but my CPU is a AMD +3200 @ 2ghz i think, so its not that great...

still dont know, its the whole getting used to it thing... and the possibility of it being slow...

I actually use and like Windows Vista. It has unfairly gained a lot of bad press, mostly from people who have never seen nor used it before. I find Windows XP monolithic by comparison, and can't stand it, so I have a hard time in my course, as all computers are at least 2-3 years old with XP Pro.

I do try and spread the good Vista word, and often people are quite surprised at the features it has, and find them quite intuitive as well as useful. While I know and accept that Vista uses more memory than XP, this is to be expected. 98 used more than 95, 2000 used more than 98, XP used more than 2000. I could go on...

I use Windows 7 now for most of my work, and I don't feel bad as it is very close to Vista, kind of like an younger and smarter sibling of Vista. Even the build number is closer to Vista. And yes, they will stop selling XP, you can't deny it. Ask yourself, how many copies of Windows 95 are available in Circuit City or PC World? Eh?

Hi Ghost451... How long did you use XP before you switched to Vista?

you cant really compare the difference between switchin from 95/98 to 2000 the same as XP to Vista as there were new technologies out that 98 did not support like USB's and other things which are now essentials but i know what you mean that in time everyone will have to switch but only if new technologies come out and force people to upgrade...

You see i dont see the point of changing unless i was forced to as i can only see changing to Vista will only gain in some gimicks that XP does not have otherwise its all the same to me, I just rather have the one thats faster rather than the one with more glitter...

AT 1st i did not want to use Vista because of the negative comments it received. But then when i actually tried it, i liked it. Especially its Search functions. Its look and feel, Vista was fast, most of the functions were smiler to that of XP, and some of XP's functions were further simplified. I know many people called vista unstable, but for me, it was really stable.

I think the reason why vista received so many negative comments was because, when vista originally came out, it was unable to support some of the outdated hardware. And like toulji mentioned, the min Hardware requirements of vista was too much at that time, if i remember right, Core2 was not very popular at that time and it was really expensive.

XP will be outdated very soon, because the hardware costs are going down down down.. and vista, Ubuntu, and Win7 will be popular among the PC users.

p.s
I am planning to try Win7, I heard from many people Win7 is actually better than Vista. Any one here used it?

From what I have read no driver support after April, but security updates until 2014 or something. I am also lead to believe wondows 7 will be out at the end of the year, dont know if it is correct or not. Regardless, you will be able to find 3rd party updates somewhere.

I've been Using Vista since 2006.
The 1st release's were a prick to get Drivers 4. but with service Pack 1, there's very few drivers you need 2 chase down.Despite all the vista Haters ,It is a good OS.Tho I do have xp.pro on a sep' hard drive for running older games. Wink

I originally hated vista with a passion, when I first tried it, no support for sli, not drivers for my printers... just all kinds of madness.
It is now... finally a good OS though. I think Windows 7 is more directly targeting MAC, even the leaked beta seems more stable than xp or vista were when first released. Hopefully it'll be worth yet another upgrade. I think support for xp in the way of drivers will remain until the release of win 7 maybe even a little longer. The official microsoft support though, I believe is ending sometime around april. Though that information seems to change depending on whatever source I look at.

I can't seem to find much solid evidence of when driver support for newer devices stops on XP but you can be damn sure I'll be running XP as long as I can on most of my offline machines, at least until I need a part that requires vista or win 7 (didn't that follow a little TOO closely on the heels of vista?)

At this point XP has a strong fanbase... there might be some kind people out there who take it upon themselves to attempt to make drivers for new products... though I'm not counting on it. I plan on stepping up at long last from XP permanently on my main rig... and never looking back, myself.

Yes... shock. Cyndic is going to change from XP.
