Why do people thumbs up Trojan downloads?
It works HOWEVER it gives your computer a deadly Trojan which blocks access to the internet amongst other things. I had to use System Restore in Safe Mode to be able to get rid of it because it blocked every program on my computer. A waste of time getting rid of spyware, Trojans and other crap they put on my computer. |

I am usually good at figuring out what is good and what is not but it had no comments and some thumbs up. In fact, this is probably the first issue I've had with this website. I am still sore, none the less, because of the bogus positives the download received in order to entice myself and other unsuspecting users to download. |

Actually, I registered simply to be able to comment and report it. I knocked it down a notch but it still has a positive. I would not recommend downloading it to see that it is full of cra*. I can't remember the name of the first one but the others were Vista Virus Removal and some other random stuff... it was horrendous. I even got IP Blocked from the net while it was on there. Fortunately, I have the net on my cell so was able to find out how to safe mode my comp since system restore would not work without it. I know how to do the stuff but I'm more of a software and web design person than hardware so I get confused at times. lol
Anyhow, thanks for listening to my rant. I am off for now. Have a good one. |

.mp3 files such as those contained in that torrent cannot contain viruses.... if you had simply played those files in winamp for example you could not have gotten a virus from this torrent.....
I have never had any experience with a .cpl file but according to google it is a control panel file basically a specialised dll, this is the likely cause of your distress.
http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/cpl
to the best of my knowledge nfo files do not execute any code when system information tries to open them, I believe they work no differently to a .txt file although i am hardly an expert on the subject
anyway to answer your original question, why do people thumbs up trojan downloads, they wouldn't have bothered to download the extra stuff, just the .mp3's and so wouldn't have got a virus. |

No, txt / nfo files do not contain viruses. I can't speak for the website links in those files though. Most .dll files included in torrents are detected as a virus whether they are legit or not. This is known as a false positive.
Basically it just comes down to taking a minute to think it through. Is the content available yet? Is the uploader reputable (ie. does he/she have other torrents and are they legit?), what do the comments say? How much info is provided on the summary page (or torrent source page if indexed)? Are their comments on the source page and what do they say? Is there an nfo / txt file available? If so download that by itself and read it. Lastly and probably should be first;
Is there a confirmed legit version?
That's all there is to it. |

if you want to be very sneaky, it is possible to place "decorations" in a .nfo file that are an encrypted script. but you still have to get the script reader into the target machine, and once the script tries to execute, a virus guard like avg or avira will see it, and stop it. same could be done with pictures, and any type of file that is meant to hold large blocks of data
theoretically possible, but not very likely, and when you try to watch your movie, or listen to your audio, it would have garbage in it, unless they gave you real aud/vid along with thier crypto script.
but that is old school uber hack stuff, and about 90% are script kiddies nowadays.
i have the WOT (web of trust) mozilla plugin. its not foolproof but uses a user generated ratings to give you a good idea if a web site is good or evil, it helps alot along with a good antivirus, and firewall |

A friend of mine had problems with his wireless (not working anymore) after playing mp3's he had downloaded with limewire (this doesn't mean that limewire gives you virus btw).
I first thought that this was a coincidence.
But when I repaired and re-installed his machine, he again had problems after a while.
And he said that this was again after he download a mp3 using limewire and played it with winamp.
He also said that the mp3 didn't play so he deleted it.
He is using NOD32 as antivirus program but it wasn't checking "all" extensions.
So I changed that setting and tried to play one of those problem mp3's and NOD32 blocked it because a virus was in it.
Don't know yet how it works but maybe it has to do with "metadata" or "id3" tags inside the mp3.
Because those mp3's aren't working you can ask yourself if those are really mp3's.
I never found an answer for that but I don't trust mp3's and I will never say that mp3's are save. |

I imagine alot of this comes from windows stupid "hide file extensions" crap, person simply names a file song.mp3.exe and windows hides the .exe, so user thinks its an mp3; when in reality its the fault of windows dumbest default setting. User deletes the file after installing the virus thinking it didnt work, when in actuality the file worked as intended |

Its a fair point. No idea why they hide the extensions, it is indeed stupid. |

Always search for comments, google the info hash! It's easy and often someone on an obscure site will tell you that the torrent just isn't right. |

Hey, it's easy to fix that! I just joined the forums today so I can post the link but Google "why does windows hide file extensions" and the second result is from Microsoft's website. |
