I do agree with you that wiki should a starting point (after Google), wiki often links me to some great research material on subjects. Smile

Chicken and egg really: do you go to wiki and then copy/paste a snippet into Google, or do you take the wiki link from an initial Google because it's likely to have something relevant?

Lately I've been wiki-ing first.

Wiki's good to use in addition with other sources. As a one stop shop though? No way. Then again, I don't think you should ever use only one site/book/etc to get all your info from.

Love the idea of the wiki though. Smile

Pomble, I usually go to what snippet in Google shows best shows what I am looking for, a lot of the time its usually to the Wiki. But like all things man made it can be wrong but most of the time a wiki entry might lead me to a link, I wouldn't have normally found. Its a useful tool.

I think Wikipedia is a great site, obviously it's not perfect as the information is put on there and maintained by members of the public. It does get a bit of vandalism, I have done repairs a couple of times after vandal attacks. Overall I'd give it a 9/10, I trust it more than 95% of the sites around. Go Wikipedia !!

I've never gotten into trouble by using wikipedia as my main/only source of information, so I guess I trust em.

Most false information is removed by the bots withing 20 minutes of posting, so I'd say its purdy darn reliable. It beat out Encyclopedia Britannica!!

(for info on this, search "reliability of wikipedia" on wikipedia)

Wiki is great. All hail the mighty wiki!

It's created & maintained by people like us. That naturally includes all our ignorance, conflicting theories & skewed perspectives.

It's great source for brushing up on subjects, but it cannot be expected to contain reliable information. It's simply a stepping stone to obtaining reliable information.

Agreed, I mean I like to know some things here and there, but it definitely can be unreliable for very in depth information.

Nothing on the internet is ultimately reliable anyway. but I trust Wikipedia enough for what I need it for. 'For the people by the people' is ok for me.

It's reliable sometimes. All you have to do is check citations. Most articles provide adequate citation, but I've come across more than a few that are pure conjecture and opinion.

It's good for checking on fav tv programmes, you know when its on and when there's breaks etc

I agree with others good as a first stop to check refs etc, then check out what you want..... anything that expands knowledge and get you interested in a subject or topic is good in my book Smile

Used to do a quiz with my students, with a prize, very pleased with the amount of kids who used wiki for the answer and then got more interested in the subject matter Very Happy
