How to Flag Torrents and Post Comments Correctly..

Comment Layout

This thread is just for helping those who are unsure of what the torrent flags actually mean, as I have noticed some confusion on it.

So...

For the first time visitor, flagging a torrent is when you attach a negative tag to your comment that reflects the nature of what the content is.
Once you have selected a tag from the drop down box and submitted your comment, it is then shown clearly in the top right corner of your post and counts as a negative rating towards that torrent's score.
There is also the option to click "Just say thanks". This gives the torrent a +1 towards its score. For layout see picture below (scroll over to resize)...

So thats the layout explained. Now for the main point of this thread.

Flagging Torrents

There are 4 different flags; Fake, Spam/Malware, Passworded and Misnamed. I will list each flag with an explanation of what it means and some examples of correct usage and common mistakes...

FAKE
Fake means that the torrent in question does not contain any usable content. This could be an empty game ISO, a RAR archive that is corrupted not to open or a movie that is made up of repeated trailers.

Correct Usage:

This movie is fake, it is not out yet.

Quote:

This game is fake, I googled the hash number and it is nuked on several sites.

Incorrect Usage:

No sound, must be fake

Just because a torrent doesnt work on your PC does not necessarily mean fake. It could be that you lack the correct codecs for your movie or your game is not installed correctly. Please ensure this is not the case before you flag.

Fake, its in RAR format

Although you should always be careful with RAR archives as you can't see what they contain without opening them, they aren't always fake and quite often aren't. It is simply a way for legit uploaders to save space or send large amounts of data more easily.

Spam/Malware
This means that the torrent contains a virus, spyware or links designed to dupe you into handing over your personal details.

Correct Usage:

This is spam, the file diverts you to a pay site.

This app contains malicious content. I have scanned it with my antivirus and several internet scanners and most of them pick up a virus.

Incorrect Usage:

This game is a virus, the crack contains malware.

This is a tricky one due to the fact that most cracks/keygens are recognized as viruses. This is because they are still hacks all the same and your antivirus will recognize it as such. The best way to be sure is to read the info file provided and use an internet scanner to check the file. If it is mostly greens you should be fine. If its mostly reds however, treat it as bad. Ultimately its your call but do not flag the torrent unless you know for definite.

Just as likely to be your PC, some things just dont work well together and sometimes it is coincidence. If comments say it is fine then you can assume its your end.

Passworded
The torrent requires a password when opened. This will usually give you a spam link to retrieve the password.

Correct Usage:

When I try to extract the file from the RAR archive, it says I need to get the password from some spam site..

Incorrect Usage:

Quote:

Passworded, the game asks for a serial code.

Pretty much all copy-written materials requires registering so this should not be flagged for that reason. If you required a password to access the torrent's contents, then yes it is pasworded. Needing a serial to use the content is a different matter.

Misnamed
Misnamed means that the torrent contains false information such as incorrect tags.

Correct usage:

The title says this movie is in French but it is actually in German. There are no other audio or subtitle tracks.

Quote:

This is labelled as a PC game however it is for PS3

Quote:

The torrent is tagged by aXXo, however it isnt his release as aXXo doesnt upload anymore.

Incorrect Usage:

This movie isn't in English!!

Torrents are used by people of all nationalities and English is by no means the default language. Unless the torrent says that it is in English then do do not presume that it is in English. A false presumption does not make the torrent misnamed.

Same as above, do not make false presumptions. Read the uploaders comments, look at any screenshots provided, read the description and check the year in the title. Its not misnamed unless it not what it claims to be.

If a lot of people are saying the torrent is fine and you the only one who disagrees, then most likely you are wrong. Ensure you only watch you movie when it has actually finished downloading. If you try to play it before that time then your Media Player will most likely play something else from your HDD.

Just Say Thanks
This means you have downloaded the torrent and are happy with it.

Correct Usage:

Not passworded..

And? Lack of password does not automatically mean good.

Thanks uploader, downloading now..

Do not pos vote something you don't even have. It is misleading and the torrent could turn out to be a fake.

Only vote on your own behalf, you may not even be posting on the same torrent.

Comments To Avoid..
These are generic comments that moderators see everyday but do not serve a purpose. These comments usually just waste space or mislead people, making it difficult for other users to find useful posts quickly....

You left out comments that include long social commentary.
I've seen people write small books that have nothing to do with the content at hand.

Nice one Pac for taking the time and the trouble. I have always regarded the comments as one of the best attributes to the IH community and P2P as a whole. My fingers are crossed that the newer internet users and finders of IH also find this sticky. Comments are our friends
