Fossil Fuel versus ?
Some contend that: In the interest of sustaining the world as we know it, we may have to learn to tread a bit more lightly, one step in this direction is to change our transportation to systems that consume less resources while fouling the air less. Others believe these alternative systems will just raise the cost of doing business and damage the economy. A number of alternative car propulsion systems have been devised, none as yet has been able to dethrone the the gasoline powered internal combustion engine as the dominant source of transportation power.
What will you be driving in 2025?
Being a bit of a petrolhead myself this question scares me, but the end of fuel as we know it, is at an end. |

Another great clip by Top Gear, I think Jay Leno is right on the money with his comments. |

There's a documentary called "Who Killed the Electric Car?" - it's very informative about a viable (in my opinion more than just viable) fully electric car that never made it into production. |

As long as there is oil in the ground, the oil companies will dictate what goes on the road. The alternate fuel system has existed for a long time, but governments were and still are pressured by the oil magnates to prohibit them on the roads by telling the people that they are not safe or other false reasons. Thake for an example the hydrogen motor, one of the most eco-friendly and powerful propulsion system. What happened to that? |

The problem with fossil fuels is NOT that they are inefficient. It is the opposite. This is why replacements don't succeed. There is little else that stores energy so conveniently. For example a battery cannot be stored unused but with a full charge for the long term unlike gasoline.
There is also Jevon's paradox, which means the more efficient we become the more we use it therefore the more waste is ultimately created. This has certainly happened with cars. When cars were first introduced they were seen as clean and efficient compared to the "pollution" and mess of horses (horsepoop, I kid you not!)
The way forward is to reduce waste by not being wasteful in transport. That is to say: we have no need for cars. Cars move themselves, but there are NO other transportation methods where the payload to vehicle/performance ratio is so bad. Cars are only popular due to their convenience. And we could choose to make other things like biking, walking, trains and streetcars convenient. In fact it would be cheaper and better because those things move people and cargo first and foremost. |
