How to survive in the debates section without getting warned

1. Dont take things personnally it is a debating forum your views will be challenged

2. So long as it is not racist or otherwise blatently offensive it is fair game and can be discussed or used to support or attack any other persons viewpoint, no matter how extreme the example or theory may be. Events that have happened are fair game no matter how extreme

2b - We have had so many locked threads and warnings from debating Israel / Middle East these threads are now locked on site, a shame for those of us who can stay calm - this is where flaming gets us!

3. Debating does not mean insulting the other persons intelligence whilst disregarding the issues they raise

4. Do not make personal attacks for any reason

4b If a personal attack is made on you do not respond in kind, the mods here are good and will take care of it, engaging in a flame war gets you warned regardless of who initiated the flame

5. Spelling and grammar are not valid points to attack, not everyone here has English as a first language and besides, if thats all you can attack with your argument is weak

6. Know when you are beaten and know when an argument is based soley on belief and cannot be proved eitherway, keep it rational, dont get upset; learn, adjust and move on!

7. Debating is a learning experience, argue to apreciate anothers point of view or to expand your own understanding - challenging anothers beliefs or perceptions logically and rationally is not to be considered a personal attack

8. Stick to discussing the issue of the thread, going off topic gets threads locked

9. Keep it in the thread, do not carry a personal vendetta from one thread to another this behaviour will be noticed and you will get warned

Finally, if you feel you cannot adhere to the issues raised above, stay out of debates, stick to the lounge where you can play and have fun without upsetting yourself and others and getting people (including yourself) warned and/or banned

10. If a mod engages in a debate as a participant they can and should be challenged within the rules of the thread

BUT

If a mod steps on with a friendly warning listen and accept it, our mods dont warn without good reason and attacking them for doing so is a really bad idea

If anyone else wants to add something please do

Note to mods - hope im not being presumptious in writing this, a certain debate i engaged in recently made me think this list was a good idea

Nope, can't hurt. Debates will always get heated, its that kind of forum where it pays to keep your cool. Some people will always confuse attacking a person with attacking an argument and take things personally. Its not so much the heated moments themselves that get people banned, its when they don't STFU after been warned and keep the arguing going. This is the main reason why we lock threads, so we don't have to resort to banning. Even some of our veteran users have lost their head at one point or another. It happens but its less of a problem if you can let it go.

Best way of putting it; Anything you say can and will be used against you.
Basically don't post if you don't want your views challenged.

It's really quite simple. Stick to the topic and stay away from insulting people because you don't agree with them, and everything will be fine. If your point is so weak you can't really make a comeback without insulting the other party. You should probably just not post.

Great thread, hopefully all will read this one just as every other great sticky.

I debate as I would in real life, a good rule I guess.

However my debates don't end up like this if the participants don't get along...

If they are mates of the mods or have "rep". Those rules don't apply at all.

Then who reads these forums anyway? Not like anybody when downloading a film from a pirate site, actually cares. Kid yourself more grownups that your opinion actually counts because they really don't. Wish that time was better spent voting on those torrents and posting remarks so people would be aware which are geninue.

I just happy to found that copy of grotesque, on valentines day.

Cry me a freakin river, yes I give someone that has been active and generally proven themselves the benefit of the doubt but I've never played favorites.

I'm going to go ahead and give you what you want though. A ban, you agreed to the rules here when you created an account.

I'm not a mate of any mod or got "that" much rep, still I comment in most threads, the active community here reads and replies to most of it. Their views and opinions are interesting to me, got a great bounch of intellectual people here, some even make toasts. I must say I've learnd alot since joining here, it's a great site.

The people that download torrents from a site like this and are finding it hard to pick the genuine ones should visit the forums, they will find threads, even stickys that almost cower every problem. Don't understand something? Then ask! - But read the rules first! Most stuff have allready been asked...

I've seen people in this section of the forum changing views and realizing new things, which is great. Sure this site won't change the world, but look at Egypt, internet played a large part of that revolution, so your kidding your self if you don't realize that sites online matters.
