===============================================
EDIT > after some time the subjects regarding WIN8 have multiplied
i eventually want to change the subject to win8 issues to indicate that
any win8 topic is good for this thread, its not about the preview leak.
I want everyone to have some time to get used to this change
initially Win8 looked very interesting, now it looks like a disaster waiting to happen!

You probably want to hold off on letting win8 connect to the internet at all!
==============================================

at the time of this thread, googling up windows 8 you get mostly sites that look like a download site but are simply setup in anticipation of a future release, however some claim an early leak exists as of yesterday!
Windows 8 is suppossed to be released somtime in 2012-20013 so..as often repeated here:

Dont go looking for something that doesnt exist.

a case in point Windows 8 is supposedly leaked, however it is supposedly windows 7 repacked to look like the preview shots of win 8 that are available on many sites. if you search you can find a supposed win8 torrent and the one comment describes it as fake. (at the time i viewed it ) id recommend against it, for now un less you are seriously comfortable with the idea of evaluating an unverified operating system.
the hype is about win 8 being USB stick portable and engineered to be compatible with mobile devices like tablets superphones and other ARM processor devices.
after some quick sifting of the web. there seem to be numerous claims either way for the validity of this piece of ware. Im downing 2 versions that the search box brings up and looking forward to ripping them apart to see if they really are re-coded.
there are reasons why a pre beta leak would look like nothing has changed, tops in my opinion is that the working parts of the system should be perfected to a level of shippability before giving the User-Interface (UI) a face lift and give a new bubbly appearance to the product. so any other brave souls out there ? lets see what this is !

It's not just 7 enterprise repacked. If you right click on a .iso file you will see that explorer now has the ability to mount iso files. Very Happy

Really pretty shocked at all the negative comments this release has got, you would think it was a final build. Confused

Don't really care, as has been mentioned the target for win 8 is mostly portable and tablets. I don't have any interest because of this.

I have this sinking feeling it's going to be another vista too. Suffering from all kinds of compatibility and driver issues early on.

The one with a file named:

Code:
6.1.7850.0.winmain_win8m1.100922-1508_x86fre_client-enterprise_en-us

Is real it's an old build from September 2010 from what I read around the webs. This was before re-branding So it still says win 7, but it has new features as you will see if you try it.

It's not very stable, and is a few years off. It's is suppose to be able to run on ARM processors (mobile devices) then Microsoft will port their other software to it. Point is your mobile device and your home PC would run the exact same software it will still be the newest and best thing when it comes out lets not bash it yet.

It seems as though MS has learned from it's past mistake namely, keeping an OS on the shelf for too long and updating it as to make it so compatible that people just don't want to change.

That's what happened with XP. If I recall, XP (before SPs) was not that nice to work with. Allot of changes and not that compatible in itself. But, once SP2 came out, that changed the ball game for XP. It changed so much in fact, that it should have been an Complete OS in itself. MS missed the mark on that one.

ME , I think was sort of the spring board for XP as was Vista to 7. But, instead of updating Vista to a point where it would as stable and compatible as XP SP2 was, (and losing money in the process) they decided to bring out Windows 7 and keep the money making machine going.

I don't think you will ever see a OS stay on the shelf for as long as XP has in the future.

As it stands ASUS never provided proper support for my motherboard for windows 7 even, thank god it's an nvidia chipset or I would have just been outright boned on that deal. I had to get really creative to find drivers that would function for a couple of other pieces of hardware I have here, and this machine isn't THAT old.
It's still a viable gaming machine even with dx11 games.

The problem is they are going to start forcing updates. Hardware and software makers alike. They are creating a artificial environment of need where there really isn't any. I have little doubt DX12 is on it's way too. When that happens, I give up. I've been chasing new dx versions since 8 and it's getting tiresome. Especially considering how 90% of the need is manufactured, it's not real. Anyone that's played the new crysis in dx9 should realize that. DX 9 was never used to it's full potential apparently , despite 3 significant updates to it before 10 was released.

I don't know I'm just getting tired of this imaginary need they are creating just to generate a profit machine.

if it ain't broke why fix it?
well MS seemed to miss out on that one for many years. However with the release of Win7 even myself as a hardened Mac user even I have to say i find 7 to very reliable stable and might i say intuitive on the surface.
The hardest work I found was just educating myself to switch off all the nonsense via msconfig to get a decent start up time and fast an fluid interface without constant system tips warning and other nonsense via the OS.
Once done and with a little help from some great little free apps I now use win 7 with appreciation as opposed to pain.
As for Win 7 on a thumb drive done and that and its a free utility offered by MS for download......otherwise them netbook owners would be having fun.
As for MS releasing a new system for ARM they have no choice since intel has now decided to take on the ARM market sector. Too much potential to be ignored. Intel were already too slow in that respect so Apple are already doing their own solution again. Not a big deal but intel must be pissed a little at the opportunity of several million chip sales already lost.

COOLIO! i love this milestone thing, then we can follow the changes in a timeline and get into the headspace of the MS dev team. i think my version of win8 will be very cool. gotta find any specialty development kits, but im betting win7 dev kits will be usable for the most part. now the file self authentication blocks in the kernel and its daemons/API's are something different. i hate those things

Seems like they are redesigning the OS to keep up with the tablet PC market.. http://www.youtube.com/user/Microsoft#p/u/5/p92QfWOw88I

build 7989 has been out for a few weeks, and is more stable, more features unlocked ect... red pill, blue pill white pill, no pill got's to medicate the windows 8. Laughing but there's other ways to get to the goodies hidden within. And as far as comments on theses releases, understand that 99% of the people who download 8 don't have a clue so they post up idiotic comments. If ya really want good info then search outside the realm of torrents and there is some good info out there.

CLIP:

While Microsoft is hard at work creating Windows 8, hackers are hard at work unlocking all of Windows 8's secrets.

The first build of Windows 8 leaked across the web just last week, and a number of new features have been popping up all over the web. The new advanced task manager has been unveiled, along with the ribbon UI, similar to that of the Office 2010 ribbon. There has also been a number of other small tweaks and features popping up.

As hackers dig deeper into the registry of Windows 8, some interesting applications have started to appear. First up, a native webcam.exe application has been discovered. Although the application is unfinished, it does give us clues that Microsoft is working to tightly integrate webcams into Windows 8, (Kinect + Windows 8 anyone?)

As Neowin previously revealed, Windows 8 will also come with a native PDF reader, also mentioned as "Modern Reader".

The interesting thing about all of the above features, is that they are found in Windows 8 M1 build 7850, the same build that previously leaked. Through a simple registry hack, these features can be unlocked.

To unlock webcam.exe:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize\

create a DWORD value called "RemoteFontBootCacheFlags", set its value to 0x100f (4111)

http://i51.tinypic.com/2s9ztaa.png

Obviously the development is still in the very early stages in Windows 8 M1.

Unlock "Modern Reader":

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Applets\Paint\Capabilities

create a string value named "CLSID", set its value to "{D3E34B21-9D75-101A-8C3D-00AA001A1652}" , then run glcnd.exe.

Unlock TaskUI:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\TaskUI, and create a 32bit value "TaskUIEnabled", set its value to "1".

Unlock Ribbon UI:

create such a key in registry: HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\CLSID\{4F12FF5D-D319-4A79-8380-9CC80384DC08}

create a string value in this key called "AppID", set its value to "{9198DA45-C7D5-4EFF-A726-78FC547DFF53}"

Now simply restart explorer and you should have the ribbon UI unlocked.

http://i53.tinypic.com/avh44o.jpg

from build 2 I was able to mount and install build 7989 right from explorer, and far as the different pill hacks just google and ye shall find. Cool
