Here's my list. This is not necessarily my top 20 of all time, just what came to mind right now. I tried mostly to include movies that no one had mentioned yet.
The outlaw Josey Wales- this is a perfect movie. Every character gets exactly what they have coming.I have seen this more times than any other movie
True Grit- John Wayne's best performance. Great dialog and wonderful story. Could have done w/o Glen Cambell tho...
Apocalypse Now- I can't believe this was not on anyone's list.
Forrest Gump- This movie just makes me feel good.
The hunt for red october- Cold War espionage at it's finest.
Lost Horizon- This is the first movie I can recall seeing in a theater. The story of the lost city of Shangri-La and great music. A must see.
The African Queen- The sexual tension between Bogart and Hepburn is exquisite.
Freebie and the bean- A really funny movie with Alan Arkin and James Caan. Amazing car chase. Stay up late and watched this at least a dozen time on cable when I was a kid.
Stop Making Sense- Talking Heads captured in one of the best performances of all time.
The last waltz- The Band w/ Sorcesse directing. Dylan, Neil Yong, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison and a bunch of other musical giants appear in this musical tour de force.
The Doors- Val Kilmer had me believing he was the reincarnation of Jim Morrison.
Where the Buffalo Roam- Bill Murray as Hunter Thompson. So much better than fear and loathing IMO.
Kelly's Heroes- An all star cast go after some German Gold. A Sherman can give you a very nice edge.
In Bruges- Funny, violent and original.
Touching the void- Awe inspiring documentary about the will to survive when mountain climbing goes wrong.
A fish called Wanda- Laughed my ass off at this one.
Lord Of The Rings Trilogy- Frodo Lives!!
The Pale Rider- They don't make westerns like this any more.
Ghostbusters- For real who are you gonna call?
Number 20 is a tie between Battlefield Earth, It's Pat, Night at the roxbury, Attack of the killer tomatoes, The love guru, Logan's run, Avatar,Triple X and Gigli... |

Wow guys, I so agree with all others who have attested to the difficulty and potentially unfairness to have this limited to 20. Especially as any listing is usually only as current or as accurate as your memory and current recollection, lol.
In any case, i will list twenty that have impressed me, although this is definitely an inexhaustive list.
1. Metropolis
2. After the promise
3. Blue Velvet
4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
5. They're a wierd mob
6. The Blues Brothers
7. V for Vendetta
8. Citizen Kane
9. The Quiet Earth
10. The good, the bad, and the ugly
11. The Shootist
12. Liquid Sky
13. A Nightmare on elm street
14. IT
15. Short Cuts
16. North by Northwest
17. Bus Stop
18. A Night at the Opera
19. Moby Dick (Peck)
20. The Dick (WC Fields)
LOL. Nah. I could keep going for ever maybe.
Same said for carp movies lol. |

have to agree with the limitations issues..... so many Westerns mentioned that I thought about but too many to say which is the best.
But it is nice to se that others have mentioned items as
True Grit.. (John Wayne)
Pale Rider
The Good bad and the Ugly.
Josey Wales
etc.
I found myself trying to think of films that did not unfairly bias another film.
I had thought of Avatar as I watched the film at least 3 times just enjoying the eyecandy but 2001 is a movie that still makes me think 25 years later. Avatar whilst amazing is only temporary as it has no real meat to the bones.
I suppose tastes also change a lot..... specially as we get better CGI etc but often the story is left behind.
However as I can not resist posting a 21st movie that I really liked I cheat and do so here.
The Man from Earth......
and Ink
and Extraordinary league of Gentlemen
and and and and and
time for a beer methinks,
plus a little weed and gonna sit down and enjoy Faithless live in Concert |

wow, bad boy bubby,
never thought I'd see that one turn up,
it's a very little known movie but it's pure quality,
the sad story of a young man brought up in a life of poverty &
degradation, never being allowed to go out into the world around him
& misled to believe the air in the outside world was poison,
it's a long drawn out film but is extremely funny but extremely sad in
parts, not a big budget movie but well thought out & well executed,
doesn't really get get that interesting until bubby finally escapes from
his false prison & begins to see the world as it really is,
lots of ups & downs ensue,
I've watched it 4 times. |

Yeah very cool movie. It has something to offend and disgust everyone. Disturbing and fasinating at the same time.
