hmmm, ok I have uninstalled & rebooted & it still doesn't recognize the discs
I burned movies onto since it went wrong but it does recognize an empty DVD disc & any discs I burned off before it went wrong,
they come up as the designated size of data & UDF,
am I right in thinking support for each disc burned is added to each disc
as it is burned off ?

I'm trying to help a friend with her computer and she's having a simular problem.
Some discs Media player will play others it won't. Some that it won't will play on VLC media player and yet others won't be reconized by either, also some won't be reconized on the computer at all. Not all are copies. Some are family events. I brought some of mine to see if it was the dvds or the machine and got the same results. The hard drive has been newly reformated about a week ago so it hasn't had a lot of time to pick up anything and my friend sticks to safe sites and very few sites at that.
Where do I start looking to find what the problem is?
Kilo Juliet, sorry I jumped in the middle of your thread with my own problem. I just didn't think it would be a good idea to start a new thread with a simular problem. |

^Hey mate; What sort of error you're getting? Is it an hourglass sort of "loading" icon when you insert the disc?
It might be a Codec problem. Get "CCCP".
Try cleaning the discs with paper towel or soft clothes from using a mild detergent if that's possible; If it's a drive problem, try blowing out the dust from the drive.; run a lens cleaner CD; After a quick run most of my old DVDs can be recognized by my lappy too. If that doesn't work the lens is damaging; hence take it to a pro or buy a new one. Google some cleaning/replacing guides.. |

All the parts are old. Her son built his sister a new computer and gave his mother the old one. We had to put in a different hard drive with Windows XP because the parts couldn't handle Windows 7. (We left the drive with Windows 7 alone for future use.) Just have to work with what's there. We've just had some bad luck with our computers all the way around. I had to change the motherboard on my computer and now I have no sound.
som ace, I'm going to look into "CCCP" for both our computers.
Back to my friend's problem. It plays pre-recorded dvds fine. Just has problems with burned dvds. Windows Media Player doesn't "see" the discs. VLC media player "see" the disc more often. A few disc the computer dosn't "see". No hourglass, nothing - looks like there isn't even something there. The programs look like they locked up but closed OK except for one time (Windows Media Player). One burned dvd played - burned off the same program (DvdNext copy 3) at the same settings and on the same brand as some of the others. Except for her granddaughter's wedding dvd and a few that she got from other people, I don't know how they were done. As a check, I played a video off a stick and it played just fine.
(side commentary out of frustration) My friend will be 80 this year and her whole life revolved around things she does on the computer, I think her kids should have given her if not a new computer, at least a newer one. Mine's old and her "new" one is even older. |

There is some jumper pins on that 939 mother board for your audio. Basically what they do is switch the sound from the back audio ports to the front audio ports which you may or may not have, regardless these front ones work off a cable you plug in. Even if you don't have the front audio, if that jumper is in the wrong position or what ever your back audio will not work. Hopefully you got your old board to look at and make it the same. Otherwise track down the user manual for that board and it will have pics of where the jumper needs to be. |

I forgot about those. I did save the board. I thought I put it in the same locations, but being a lefty, I probably switched them. I'll check them out. Thanks.
Now all I have to do is figure out my friends computer problem, and (fingers crossed) maybe that will be the last of our computer problems for a while.
(edited) OK read the book, found where the jumpers go. It's marked Front Panel Audio. It's listed as bline_out_L & line out_L, NC, bline_out_R & line out_R, +5VA & micpwr, agnd & mic2.
The jumpers are on bline_out_L & line out_L and bline_out_R & line out_R. I know that's wrong, I just don't know which one's right. I get that the last 2 sets are for a microphone (at least I think I'm right about that), but beyond that, well I'm guessing. The book doesn't go into enough detail and ASUS doesn't seem to be very user friendly, but maybe that's just because I'm still learning.
I was thinking about my lady friend's computer disc drive problem. She has a CD drive and a DVD drive (and I know I was putting the DVD in the right drive). Could there be a codec or driver missing?
(edited again) trollster - You were right about the drive. I put a drive out of my computer and it worked just fine. If I knew how to do it, I'd look to see if the other one is fixable but it's probably not worth the effort if it's as old as the rest of the machine.
I found a solution to my sound problem. Moving the jumpers didn't make a difference. I bought a usb adapter, plugged in the speakers and it worked. I think the green plug for the sound isn't working, but it doesn't matter now. Thanks for the help. |
