There is also a different TOR (the onion router)
http://www.torproject.org

I have a feeling this kind of thing is something everyone may need to use.
at least check it out and see its more than a VPN.
you can set up your own encrypted network routes if you have enough people cooperationg

Tor onion would not be able to handle the the bandwidth especially if everyone started using the onion it was not made for this sort of thing..
Bittorrent over Tor and also a good read Tor: Truth and misinformation. .. Some say that BTGuard or hidemyass vpn are good but these are not free even better a seedbox but they cost money..Me thinks TOR would be very slow

if you go through a congested route it will choke, but if you have friends who can set up you can all set up your own route, its techie thats all.
you have hhit on a relatively recent problem, there are lots of offers for some VPN thing but its a scam/adware hook of some sort.
i use proxpn at times. there is another way, but its a unix/linux method
it involves SSH tunneling from site to site pain in the ass so a VPN on windows is easier. i think VPNreactor.com is still good for a freebie, most VPN are very popular and have a lottery like new membership pool, and nuke memberships that are not being used

the great thing about the proxpn was that it was basic and it worked
(for awhile). i looked at the tor vpn options but honestly they look like alot more setup, much deeper programs than i was hoping for.
ive looked over hotspotshield, anchorfree, torvpn and chrispc.
tried a few but im having the same problem, cant connect to bittorrent client when vpn is connected. maybe the problem is on my machine but
everything is ok without the vpn. of course theres no real support with the free service and i wont hold my breath waiting for a return email.
i was hoping someone currently using a basic free vpn could make a recommendation. thanks for your responses. ill probably try the vpnreactor next, see what happens.
edit= ok, forget vpnreactor
there is a 30 MINUTE TIME LIMIT per vpn connection, and outbound email (SMTP) is blocked. Once you have been connected for 30 minutes, the VPN server will automatically disconnect the VPN tunnel. You will need to WAIT 30 minutes & manually reestablish your VPN connection

You have to remember that these vpns your talking about are free and will have allot of downtime you are going through a free network..Even a paid for vpn will have downtime and can be slow..

also VPNs come and go, and they are only as secure as the end points. the admins at either end can give out your info if they are leaned on for it.
also there are VPN sites out there that are blatant malware distributors.
Dont pay too far in advance if you do choose to pay for one or you could get taken when they fold up and leave town.

The TOR button (different than Onion router) its good for anonymous surfing but you also have to change your habits. look at it like a paper trail, if one point in the trail can be traced back to you then its not anonymous, its only obscured/obfusicated.
use a wifi hotspot away from where you hang out and setup a few email accounts for "other people" alive dead fictitious, whatever info profiles you can remember, use TOR button while your doing it and find out which email sites care if you are anonymous. some of these sites allow storage space, so you can get creative and use that to your advantage
or else set up a seed box with one of these profiles access it anonymously, from a free location.
