Hey guys, I just got my girlfriend onto Isohunt so she can grab music for her ipod, she currently has no net security on her home laptop and was wondering what's the best free net security out there. I use a mac so don't need to worry about this, and havn't for years, upon memory I think I once used some programs called Mozilla and AVG, are these still good to go ? I have noticed the other recent virus post but doesn't mention if it is free. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

http://freebies.about.com/od/computerfreebies/tp/best-free-antivirus.htm

Although why they put AVG at #1 has baffled me? Shocked

I think you'll find a lot of users here would say avg isn't as good as it used to be.

One of the best....or try AVG free otherwise. Never had a problem with either.

Also, all i do is tell my mrs not to click on something unless she knows what it does...the best form of protection Laughing

Edit: dj ninja got there first Rolling EyesLaughing

The 3 programs I use are AVG free, CCleaner and Malwarebytes reg’ed version.

Malwarebytes reg’ed version also scans the com ports and blocks any malicious connections while downloading.

My personal setup is Microsoft Security Essentials, and Comodo Firewall (also free). I then run a malwarebytes(free version) scan every so often.

For free AVs, most people seem to use either avast, avg, or a more recent addition, microsoft security essentials. I have recently moved to this myself from avast. But to be honest would recommend either or. I dont really like avg and dont think its that good, but alot of people use it. But as dezzie said, dont think its as popular as it was. So give avast or mse a go Wink

For a free protection I would use avast with Comodo Firewall and malewarebites also would have a copy of Spybot...

For paid app would have NOD32 AntiVirus with the set-up as above apart from avast..

Also would have a copy of Sandboxie and HijackThis ...
Plus a copy of firefox and palemon would not want that internet explorer crap ...

Then I would also have copy Unlocker this is also good for deleting viruses and problem files ...

Dont know if it the best but works well for me ..

Thanx for all the solid advice hunters, rep for all those who contributed. Avast appears to be the overwhelming choice for security, hooked her up and she's now jailsafe. Cheers.

AVG is best and totally free of coast i am using it and its great. i have some personnel data like photos, videos and that data is very important for me. i am collecting photos, videos since 2005 of my family members. my pc always goes affected by viruses and malware etc. i have tried many free edition antiviruses but that all are sucks and now i am very satisfied with avg. Panda was best till 2007-8 but now AVG is super hero

kindly pointed here by istolealoafofbread...am now uninstalling AVG using CCcleaner...hope this is enough without using a third party uninstaller?

am downloading AVAST as it does seem to be the choice of most on here and the net, closely followed my microsoft security essentials.

one thing im puzzled by is the sandbox feature? any quick explanations before i google?

will have a look for somethin other than malwarebytes unless the masses thinks this would be ok to keep with Avast?

edit do i need a malware programme with avast? it says it is both....also microsoft security seems to be both?

As most will tell you mate...
Everyone has their favourites.

For Anti Virus:
I've always come back to AVG, having flirted with most of them. It's free. It does what I ask it to.

Malware wise I has:
Malwarebytes AntiMalware
Spybot- Search and destroy.
Super Anti Spyware.

I let malwarebytes run in the background and it doesn't hog much. (just as well as I still have my old dinosaur pc!)

There are others that come and go.
I got an infection on a flash drive a while ago, having used it in a net cafe, and (stupidly) connected it to my pc without scanning... and that was fun. Rolling Eyes
Needed Combofix, esat online and Adwcleaner to get a full clean.

I use ccleaner all the time. Best little app ever. Love it.

Whenever I run into a problem that stumps me when fixing my mates' pc's/lappys, I always visit bleepingcomputer. Sound advice. Zero bullshit.

edit
As mentioned across in the other post- keep them updated Razz

If you need to be bulletproof then Avast, Malwarebytez and Spybot S&D is the way to go. Personally though I find Microsoft Security Essentials to be adequate protection. For less experienced netizens though, I recommend all the above.

thats what im toying with mate...have all 3 or just MSE. i dont think i need to be bulletproof as this is the first problem causing trojan iv had...and i dl all the time. you still recommend spybot as well as malwarebytes? is that cuz its more of a fine searcher for registry issues than mbam? looks like im going back to my old setup
